Why are Wii games still so expensive?

Like many people around 2010, I found my wii to be a little disappointing. While it seemed different and innovative, it often felt incomplete, rushed, and a little inadequate. Since I have more free time on my hands, but not enough money to invest in a current gen system, I decided to whip out my old wii and give it a go by trying some new games. However, games that came out 8 or 9 years ago are still going for $40-$60 online. What gives? Why are RPGs like Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story still so expensive? Is there a better place to find these games used

Most games drop to around $20 after being out for 2-3 years. What gives?

There has been a huge rise in nostalgic gaming in recent years along with retro gaming which bodes well for nintendo because for the most part nintendo was never oriented towards the hardcore gamer. They were less focused on immersion and more on fun quirky game play. IMO This means that their games hold up a little better over so the games hold their value at a better clip.

I also think nintendo tends to be a bit more protective of their titles and less expansive in their releases which also keeps the prices higher

There's no place to download them (you can download Xenoblade on a Wii U, but that's another dead end platform), and so the inventory so to speak has stayed the same while demand has increased.

I would recommend playing them on a Dolphin emulator instead.

is a dolphin emulator like a rom program for Wii? Wouldn't the lack of wiimotes and motion technology really hamper the play experience of a wii game? Obviously, an x-box 360 game would translate well since I could literally plug a 360 controller into my computer's usb port.

I would still happily pay $60 for Mario, smash, Kart, DK, metroid, Pokémon, etc...

The market dictates value.

There's some good stuff in the $10 range:

Take a look at Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. It's one of the best games when it comes to "point and shoot" Wii games.

I've also heard good things about Red Steel 2, but I haven't tried it for myself yet.

Well Xenoblade had a limited initial run in the US. Positive word of mouth caused it's demand to exceed supply. I thought though that they re-released it a few years back.

True, but my question is why is the market value of these games holding so highly when nearly all other game's values decline so rapidly? So many players buy games when they first come out, play through them, and then resell them on the secondary market, especially when next-gen systems come out. By then, a game is at the end of its print run and all there is no longer a shortage. So, games tend to be at their lowest value point following a next generation system's release.

The Last Story retails on Amazon for $80 and the cheapest used option is $55? Did they just not make that many copies? Did players not sell these games when they were done with them so the secondary market is limited.

That makes sense

Well, if you want to, you can connect a wiimote to a PC, it's just hard.

But you can emulate the game with it running as a Pro Controller. That's how I've put 20 hours into the first Xenoblade.

In an open market sure, but this is not one. Nintendo has the price control and they value the premium image over a bump in sales for their less successful games. They don't give retailers the ability to lower the price of games as aggressively as other publishers.

That makes sense. Rather than having a relatively free market where following production runs, sellers charge whatever price will get rid of their stock the fastest, Nintendo sets arbitrary price controls in exchange for the rights to carry their shelf space, meaning it stays in stock longer, but sells at a higher price.

That makes sense.

Many of the most popular exclusive Nintendo games have infinite replayability, very loyal following, and are very often not subject to over saturation and multiple sequels on the same generation or console.

I could still sit down right now and play Super Mario or original Donkeykong, etc... I can't say that about too many Xbox or Playstation games.

There is also a general lack of competition and strong brand loyalty

Any opinions on Xenoblade or The Last Story? At those prices, they better be absolutely incredible.

I've beaten The Last Story and played through a good bit of Xenoblade. Both are very good RPGs, but not fantastic. I would easily recommend both of them for fans of JRPGs.

I have over 500 hours played in it. Does that help?

Are you a big fan of action/jrpgs? If so, get it. You'll love it. If not, don't. It's definitely not a generic super accessible game to someone who never played or enjoyed jrpgs.

If you want a more pure jrpg to sink your life into get Octopath Traveler. Another awesome game.

If you want to try the game out before you buy it, send me a personal email and you can come over to my house and play it. I have a really nice big screen TV and a really comfortable couch, you probably won't even notice when I sneak up behind you and kill you.
