What are the appeal of FPS games, SP Campaign or Multi-player

I have played a few FPS in my times but , for me I play both multiple and single player and find that most of the people I know tend to just bypass the SP and play MP.
To me, it's hard to justified buying a brand new FPS game upon purchase if it's going to be almost exactly like the last one with a few minor tweaks to the game play. Do people know this and don't care or is there something truly unique MP battle with every iteration?
I'm looking at the COD and BF of the industry.

Most people seem to love multiplayer. I only play sp. I don't have enough time to get good at mp.

I don't get big into FPS games because I know I will have to pay 15 bucks every couple months just to stay current and be able to play on every server.
I also tend to get tired of a particular FPS game by the time the first map pack comes out. So then I just start playing every once in awhile. Do I really want to pay 15 bucks just to play a couple rounds with friends? No.
I'm a huge fan of single player FPS games though, especially the Half-Life games and Bioshocks.

I hear you on games like COD.
Those lazy asses at Activision don't even give you all new maps or graphics on their MP maps.
You can blatantly see where they cut and pasted elements from game to game.
Usually the FPS games I like best are pretty much only MP and cost less. CounterStrike and Left For Dead are my favorite two FPS games this generation.

Are you talking about Xbox live or for new map packs and dlc?

for me, the appeal has always been in multiplayer. FPS are really only fun for me when I'm playing with my friends for bragging rights.

I'm talking about map packs mainly, I don't mind the xbox live fee because it's used for many other things, and I certainly don't mind paying extra money for games I like.
I got a bad taste in my mouth after I got the original black ops, quit for a few months, and then came back and had to buy several map packs just to be able to play the game it seemed.

I always play the SP campaign first, but MP is where it's at

I used to be very into them, but I rarely care now. Can still be a good, exciting campaign but it takes a story-driven one for me to be interested.

I like to kill things that are prettier than the previous year. DWI.
But I do prefer BF over COD. Haven't bought COD since the old xbox days.

At least with battlefield, I feel like things have changed: Gameplay, graphics, weapons, etc...
With COD, I could play my old version of Modern Warfare and probably not miss out on much by not buying BLOPS 2. It all looks the same to me.
I very rarely play single player. I bought games like age of empires, starcraft, battlefield 3, etc.... all for the multiplayer. Never touch the single player modes.
Only time I really play single player is if I'm playing things like Final Fantasy 7-9, or doing my own dynasties in NCAA Football, Madden and NBA 2k13.

Where COD went wrong is when they begun to release a new version every year and make itself the madden of the Fps world. COD sucks now.

The only reason I play FPS games are to keep in touch with my old undergrad roommates. We usually set aside a night or two per week to play some COD (bleh) together for a few hours. I'm more of a single player guy... way more excited for Witcher 3 and InFamous than Titanfall, Destiny, BF4, etc.
I'm thinking our get together game for next-gen systems will be Destiny or BF4, both of which are more appealing than COD.

As awesome as BF4 looks, I prob won't buy it for a while until I can get it cheaper. I just don't player multiplayer enough so there is no point. That's why Bioshock was good for me and metro, they both have good stories.

I always play some of the campaign just to get a feel for the weapons and gameplay before jumping into the multiplayer. I skipped it with BF3 and I suffered for a while because of it.

I think it simply comes down to why you play video games. My primary reason for playing video games these days is to be immersed in a story and world. So, I play 98% single player. I enjoy online multiplayer but just don't have the time to play enough to remain competitive in them. Also, having young kids makes it difficult for me to maintain a consistent schedule with a group of gaming friends.
But I have friends who only play games for the competition. They buy fighting games to only play other people, buy Starcraft II and never touch the single player, and buy COD only to play with buddies for bragging rights.
Having said that, I enjoy when a game lets you play through it's single player campaign with other people, like Halo, Gears of War, and (in a way) Left 4 Dead and Borderlands.

I play the new version mostly because of the updates to guns, gear, customizations and locations. Usually there are some new tweaks that the community has been clamoring for instituted also. Like the ability to choose your own load out in Blops II called the pick 10 system. The customized Killstreak selection for a specific class in MW3 was nice too.
However the main reason I play any FPS is for the MP experience of competitive gaming versus and WITH other people. I love challenging myself in a strategic game of cat and mouse to see which player has the quicker reflexes or tighter tactics.
I really dig the team aspect and communication required to dominate the other team. I have a blast playing MP games with my LESI buddies. Its like talking on the phone with a bunch of buddies while playing video games. We bullshite about life, sports, whatever and throw in the occasional call-out of where the baddies are.

I can't believe it, I finally agree with Fox on something

I played BF3 because of the awesome MP, but mostly I stick with SP games. If the SP is good I don't really care if it is FPS or not.
Metro: LL for example.
