yeh i would argue this is a fairly dumb debate as well.

i feel the two largest contributing factors in 'skillz' is:

Yeah you define "skill" in the same way we define sports "skills" which is the natural ability of the individual.

For gamers who have been wearing the 4 eyes since middle school and eating Cheetos behind their CRT 19 Inch monitor as they burn out their retinas and play "Decent" on 56k against their neighborhood.. we would consider skill to be the "learning" process and less about natural inate abilities.

do you think we are leaving out the factor that in these 'Fighting Games' button mashers/combo type games

Lets' not instantly classify them as "button mashers," any game can be a "button masher" really.

I know plenty of people who just roam on FPS' shooting. They don't actually "play" they just shoot. This can be said against all games.

but in FPS's and other game types there is a 360 environment that you have to be aware of.

Yes and no. It doesn't make it more complex or require more skill.

Most skill: Smash Brothers: Melee or LoL

Melee definently takes a ton of skill.
LoL requires the least skill of the three MOBAs(HoN, Dota), because it caters to casuals, but that's a different debate.
As an avid player of both SC2 and Dota2, i can say without a shadow of a doubt SC2 requires more INDIVIDUAL skill, but teamwork is a skill in it's own right.

@whoever asked me why I asked the question if I already know the answer - I have my opinion, but wanted to see what others thought.

See I would gander to say that things like RTS games and 2D fighters require sitting down and truly gaining "skill" in order to perfect them. I know people who have been playing FPS's for years and all it takes is a 14 year old with quicker reflexes to sign on and the 32 year old with diminishing reflexes and speed can't keep up.. more "what you can do" and "ablities of the individual" based, than an RTS or 2D fighter are it's all about the timing and preparation.

Yes. The fact that most high level 2D fighter pros are worried about frames, not in a frames per second way but in a animation frames per move way, it's clear there's a large technical and timing preparation that goes into planning and thinking about those games. There's a reason fighting games really started the competitive game movement.

It is pointless to argue skill of a game though, because what I consider "skill" is going to be different than someone who actually thinks they have an advantage in another game because of their "skill".

Yes and No. I think the discussion deserves some merit and thinking. It's a nerdy discussion, but there is a certain amount of "skill" involved in playing games. Just like there's skill in chess, soccer, knitting, etc.

I also think there is a core set of "skills" that could be understood to be important to game playing. Whether that breaks down into "FPS skills are different from 2D fighter skills" that's the argument really.

The skills I have to learn from an RTS game or a 2D fighter game remind me of math and science class..

The "skills" I learn from an FPS are the skills I had to get when I went out for recess and owned everyone in soccer.

There was a good period there where I really went into the 2D Fighter scene. That stuff was ridiculous. I mean memorizing frames, when to cancel moves, how to "cheat" the system. Juggles. Combos.

And if I try to go back....it would be tough to relearn. Most complex fighter ever imo, was probably Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves. MvC2 had some balance issues that Wolves didn't have. *cough*MagnetoandStorm*cough*

Four pages and no one has mentioned Counter-Strike? Really?

I'd wager that the only game that takes more skill than CS is Starcraft.

Team Fortress 2 on the PC has some serious master twitch gamers.

I have had scouts in that game kill me by shooting me in the face while jumping up and down on my head as I was running around trying to shake them.
