Polygon says that a Nintendo rep confirmed to them. The plot twist is that Nintendo never confirmed the retailer preorders.

This.
The only thing I’ve seen concerning Japan is
LINK
April 9 is the deadline for the individual countries with higher tariffs to come to the negotiating table. The across the board 10% one I think is tomorrow. So it’s possible Japan is working on something and we hear about it before the 9th

Now that y'all mention it, it's possible these retailers jumped the gun and are trying to save face.
This is the message from Nintendo where I registered interest through my Nintendo Account for a preorder:
These retailers were going to have preorders available before Nintendo sent out priority invitations to long-term Nintendo Online subscribers? I guess that's possible, but doesn't seem very typical.

Nintendo Account holders in the US and Canada who are at least 18 years old are eligible to register.
The first batch of invitations will go out starting May 8, 2025, with additional batches of invitation emails sent periodically until purchasing on My Nintendo Store is opened to everyone.
Initial invitation emails will be delivered on a first-come, first-serve basis to eligible registrants who meet the priority criteria. Invitees will have 72 hours from the time when the email is sent to complete their purchase.
Priority requirements are as follows: As of 4/2/2025, (i) you must have been the one who purchased any Nintendo Switch Online membership, (ii) you must have had any paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for a minimum of 12 months, and (iii) you must have opted in to share gameplay data and have at least 50 hours total gameplay hours.

I've never understood the zeal to buy consoles on launch day. Unless they have some insanely good exclusive that launches with them (Like say a Mario 64) you really aren't missing out on anything if you wait a bit.

It’s generally good practice to let the launch day buyers beta test the hardware for you. It’s pretty common nowadays for products to launch with some kind of quirks defects that need to be addressed by the manufacturers.

I'm pumped about Mario kart.

I don't think the retailers would say the update came from Nintendo if they were just trying to save face. Blaming Nintendo if it was actually the retailers' fault wouldn't be a great move

Still weird for Nintendo's pre-orders to open after third party, but maybe that's legit.
Either way, it looks like Vietnam is making a deal with Trump so this will all blow over anyway.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but the Switch 2 will play Switch 1 games via emulation. The hardware is so different it can't play them natively.
Also the majority of Switch 2 physical versions of old switch 1 titles actually come with the switch 1 cart and a download code for the switch 2 version. It's like they didn't want to produce switch 2 physical versions of the older games, the switch 2 versions are basically digital only and it lets them use up of the old switch 1 physical stock. Kinda weird, something to be aware of for the physical media crowd.

If this turns out to be true, I will be pretty upset. Would be a very weird decision as Cyberpunk has said that it will have the full game on a cart. Not a download code.

Not trying to be political, but the game prices especially have been the worst publicity for Nintendo since... Mario 2 delay maybe?
Tariffs definitely might affect them, but i'm wondering if the backlash is part of the reason for the delay.

I have not seen this anywhere other than this thread.

Speculation on social media is that Nintendo is pressing pause on the preorders because of the system pricing backlash, and that it truly has zero to do with the tariff situation.

The Switch 2 Welcome Tour "game" they showed off during the direct is $10.
I predict almost nobody will buy it. The title of it and the "gameplay" we've seen it looks exactly an instructional demo, not a real game you pay money for. Utterly insane for them to make it a purchase and not something that just came pre-installed on the system. Whatever meager revenue it ultimately generates is not worth the PR backlash.
