Jeez that seems like an awful way to go. Have to wonder how he screwed up so bad that the instructor couldn't save it.

Well I agree, but the way I'm reading the article it appears he himself was piloting.

ETA: Yeah just opened the article up to double check:

quote:

Claude Guillemot -- the co-founder of the popular video game company Ubisoft -- has died after a plane he was piloting crashed.

Are we sure Ubisoft’s stock wasn’t piloting the plane?

Sad for his family and yes I have no idea why so many rich dudes want to get into aviation as a hobby.

People now by default think of flying as safer than cars, but that's only true because the vast, vast majority of flying is commercial airline miles which is exceptionally safe. Not all flying is created equal though.

If you just look at cars vs small planes, small planes are significantly more dangerous.

"Small planes are not safer than cars. While commercial airliners are the safest way to travel, private and small aircraft (general aviation) are significantly more dangerous than driving."

"Per Mile Traveled: On a mile-for-mile basis, small planes are generally considered 3 to 5 times more dangerous than passenger cars, with some estimates putting it even higher depending on the specific type of flying"

"Per Hour of Travel: When measured by hours of exposure, small planes are often 10 to 20 times riskier than driving a car. In fact, the fatality rate for small aircraft is often compared to the risk of riding a motorcycle"

The advice has long been there - he should have gotten more comfortable with not flying planes
