GameCube was popular during a time I wasn’t super into gaming (late college/early grad school). Maybe consider a switch too. There are plenty of single player Nintendo first party games.

Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness,Metal Gear Twin Snakes, Rouge Squandron,

Couldn't you just get a Wii? Those are BC with Gamecube games.

Yeah at this point I'd probably just suggest getting a wii as it would let you play gc games with wired controllers or wii games. You could buy other old school games on a wii but the server side of that functionality might not exist anymore. Possibly could find a wii with some of those games already on them from previous owner

GameCube games can be downloaded from the Nintendo Store onto a Switch and they have a GameCube controller for the Switch for sale as well.
Best Buy

Competitive super smash bros players.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Gamecube, and still argue Super Smash Melee is the best Smash.

Mario Kart Double Dash is the best MK when it comes to actual racing.

Gamecube didnt get its proper due when it was initially released but I feel in many ways the console has aged the best of that entire generation
Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Windwaker, Mario Sunshine, RE4, Rogue Leader, Viewtiful Joe, Supermonkey Ball, Tony Hawk 3, Paper Mario, Star Fox Adventures, to name a a few...lots of very solid titles.

Being able to port your Virtual Console purchases to a Switch, particularly with the sunsetting of the platform coming soon, would be a major coup.

Gamecube is worth it in my opinion. I'm still playing Melee and Custom Robo. Want to get Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, but it's over 100 bucks on eBay

GameCube was a top tier system imo. Definitely quality over quantity when it came to their titles.

I think that’s what I’m gonna do. I think the GameCube looks cooler, but I suppose the wii is the smarter routine since it’s just as cheap and you can play games for two consoles on one. I’d never play wii games, but my wife probably would. I’ve been looking online and I expected the console and games to be a lot cheaper, but they are a little higher than expected.

Not every Wii is backwards compatible (all the white ones are, black ones are 50/50). That's definitely the way to go since it's easy to hack if you don't want to emulate via Dolphin.
