These massive downloads before being able to play need to end.

This is getting absurd. I buy FFXV and before I can play, I have to download the game, download an update, and then download an additional file for 30 mins before the game even starts.

What happened to buying a game, putting it in the console, and playing?

You can thank publishers forcing developers to release incomplete games to meet deadlines

Gotta make dat money

This is why you buy a PS4. Games that don't even bother to put all content on the disk (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5) just can't be helped though.

I have FFXV on PS4 and I had to wait forever to play even after popping in the disc

I'm done buying physical copies of games. You still have to download a shite ton of stuff regardless, so you may as well just purchase & download the game the night before and play it when it's ready.

Why does this matter? PSN is notorious for super long download times.

What?? I have both and PS4 is just as bad if not worse.

While the day one patches are annoying, they don't really affect me anymore. I'll pop the disc in before I go back to work for lunch and just download while I'm at work.

FFXV has an unusually long install time, but you don't have to download the day one patch before you can play the game. You cannot play a game and patch at the same time on Xbox One.

I waited 2 days to play it cause it was downloading on and off. It's the worst I've experienced.

If it is a day one patch you probably don't want to skip that

You're not skipping it. You download while you play. Ultimately, it's up to the individual as to whether or not their first experience with the game will be with or without the day one patch. Most of the time, I don't even notice any differences. If there's a case of where I know the day one patch dramatically improves some aspect of the game, I may wait until the update finishes before I play. A lot of times that depends on the file size too. If it's a gig or two, I might wait on the update. In the case of FFXV's 9gb day one patch, I played the game without the patch the night I bought it and let the patch download while I was at work the next day.

I did on Fintal Fantasy XV and it was fine with no game breaking bugs. I just waited until the update was ready and installed it when it finished. The worst are sports games that you have to update the game to use Internet features considering all the game modes run online.

I just got a ps4 pro and am downloading FFXV right now and it's been an all day endeavor.. it's crazy how long it takes.. I have 200mb/s connection but the ps4 rarely even gets 50.. my xb1 however downloads stuff SUPER quick, and of course my PC even quicker. PSN is notoriously slow when it comes to downloads.

I was having this conversation today with some friends of mine while we were playing MarioKart

The Nintendo64 came out in 1996, that's 20 years ago.

They still have not made a better system.

Mario Party, MarioKart, Smash Bros, Rush, Mario64, OoT, and on and on.

I miss the days of same console gaming with friends. Do they even make fun party games anymore where you sit with multiple people in the same room and play? Like Kart, Smash, etc...

I feel like everything is either single player or online.

You most certainly can play and download at the same time. I just bought Battlefront and The Division on Xbox One digitally and was able to start playing both before they were finished downloading. battlefront once it reached about 50% and the Division once it hit about 70%. Was able to play all the way through the tutorial in Brooklyn. Couldn't go to manhattan until it finished downloading, however.

I find that even Nintendo's starting to get away from that. And it's sad.
I still have gamenights like a 2k or Madden tournament. But I miss playing Mario Party as a drinking game then playing Mario Kart right right after

PSN is absolute shite to download from. I can download a full Steam game in the time it would take PSN to patch anything.

Also not buying physical games helps with this since you can usually just pre-load the game with the day one patch.
