First time playing in this universe. About 2 hours in. Playing a high ekf warlock on balanced difficulty.

Really enjoying it. I'm not the best yet with the fighting mechanics.

Any pointers for a first timer?

Find equipment that works well together. Lightning charges, heat, wrath, arcane synergy, etc..

Pick a theme for that character (like Heat for karlach), stick to it, and find/equip armor and weapons that magnify that component. It will increase your dps per encounter. Then enhance that even more with environmental conditions. For example, you can have a lightning build 100% equipped by the end of act 1. Equipment that builds charges with every hit or dash and a ring that resists all electrical damage. Start a fight by throwing water all over the group of bad guys, then send the lightning monk/fighter in to start dealing 2-3x damage to enemies with a wet status.

I GD love this game.

this

I have played a good Drow Ranger named. . .well you can guess

And an evil Halfling thief named Bilbo

I am going to do a wizzy next

The disappointment in Veilguard just made me go back to this game, and from player counts I am not alone

They announce they will add 12 new subclasses next year

Also, avoid walkthroughs your first run through

Making bad choices are part of the fun, add to the replayability

Thanks, I am reading these.

I feel like I need to redo my spells now that I've played a bit and learned a little.

I think you can change spells at level ups??

You should be able to swap a spell out when you level up but there's also an NPC that will let you (and your companions) respec if you need a more serious fix to your/their builds later.

Clerics, druids, Palls, and Wizards can swap spells anytime out of combat. Everyone else can swap during level up.

The former is important because you can switch in Command on Shadowheart the moment you meet her to try to get the sword drop on the Nautaloid.

Side quests, do as many as you can find before progressing on the main story.

For me, having a good thief in the group to pick locks on chests and doors as well as disarm traps was a must. I played a... well... I think you can guess, and found some gloves for him that gave an extra die roll on picking locks and disarming traps. That made a ton of difference.

Save often. There will be some really big battles which may require some extra chances for you to experiment with strategic placements (one in particular in Act 2 was a lot of frustrating fun in that aspect).

While I’m happy about the new subclasses, I’m more excited about the cross play so I can do runs with my console peasant friends

It fricking sucks. The worst is that if you play local coop on PC, everyone has to use controllers. No one can use kb/m. I hates it.

Though the one thing I’m envious of is that because the interface is so bad on controller, Larian threw them a bone and created a “loot in radius” button which is both very cool and utter bullshite that PC players don’t have it
