i havent tried experimenting with the named crew members you can hire at bars. not the "weapon specialist" types but ones with actual names.
I tried a couple of the "specialists". Turns out you best wait till you have a large ship capable of many multiple crew or space at a facility you built.
If left unassigned you lose them on next takeoff/landing.

“Hey, you can sell contraband at the tax authority at The Den in the wolf system (close to Alpha Centauri). They don’t scan your ship."

I also ran the Casino contraband farm some last night. Enemies weren't respawning so it was quite easy. Just have to make sure you undock your ship, them sleep 7-8 days, and re-board the casino and run through. Make sure your difficulty is turned to Very High. There is a chest that usually has epic or legendary weapon in it and credits. And a secret chest that has a ton of contraband in it every tine.

yeah im not too concerned about them. im talking about the ones you can hire that have specific names. i hired Gideon Aiker from new Atlantis and even though i unassigned him from my ship he still on my possible roster. when he was on my ship there were chat options with him and we talked about how he was ahving a rough time, and he lost his own ship because of debt he incurred...blah blah.
im curious if those types go out on missions with you if they can develop into more involved storyline quests like the constellation guys. I'll have to play around with that. ive found quite a few other named crew you cane hire all around but havent hired any. one is the Dr. at the bar in akila.

Well this was what I was going to post.

I really like the game but the economy is out of whack.
I well have over 1 million in credits. 2 apartments, 2000 in cargo waiting to sell(most epic and legendary) and 6 ships and I just learned how to capture and board ships. I had to destroy 2 very nice ships because I couldn't pilot them.
All of that with no guides/spoilers and I haven't done any outpost/research stuff. Just picking up missions or landing and shooting places up.
It does lend itself to multiple playthroughs using deferent styles.
I really wish there was a local map and that you could land all of your ships in one spot. I would like to line them up like Power Armor in Fallout. Or can you do that at an outpost?

yeah i havent even touched outposts and creds are becoming trival quickly.
it is frustrating how little cred each vendor has as well. so sick of sleeping 24 hours to go back out and sell to the same vendor my boat load of shite.

Two mods it sounds like I would like is more money to vendors and one that allows for black market sales of ships.

Yeah I don't even bother to wait. I just have a pile to sell when I can. I have a pile of contraband on the floor at the Den waiting to be sold. Money is just not a concern so I sell when I'm bored or happen to be near somewhere I can offload some junk.
I'm to the point I mostly just take Epic and Legendary stuff to make it worth while.
The amount of high quality loot also makes it unnecessary to craft. I'm practically unstoppable. Reminds me of Fallout when you have Power Armor, Boone with the anti material rifle and upgraded EDE.
They also need to let you have a separate cargo hold load out for each ship instead of just one that transfers.

This is really the only thing that's frustrating me with the game
One thing I don't really understand is, when you transfer ship inventories and the misc category of the home ship is filled with clutter, is that all of the stuff decorating the interior of the ship you're transferring from?

How many hours in are you? How did you rack up money so fast?

Yes. And if you sell it off it respawns.

Respawns where it should be on the ship or in the cargo hold?

Good to know
Clearing that out would be huge for my inventory management but I didn't want the ships to lose that lived-in feel

You can raid the abandoned casino in the Olympus system and farm it. It resets every 7 days. The vault has a chest with a lot of contraband. Also there is a weapon crate with a good chance of legendaries. This isn’t a cheese, just part of the game.
Or, if you don’t care about exploiting the game, you can basically do the whiterun chest cheese where you get below the map on Alpha Centauri and loot the ship vendor and get $72k ever time.

No sure on hours but I'm up there mid 30s level.
The UC mission line where you infiltrate the Crimson fleet has a huge payout. You can look it up, I won't spoil it.
All of mine was without doing any farming or "hacks". I've found chests with around 10 contraband. I land and clear out the "abandoned" facilities on planets. Each one will result in 20 or so weapons, and multiple suits, packs and helmets in addition to the other loot/credits. As you level up many will be Epic or Legendary and very valuable.
I took one of the mission board missions to clear out some Spacers on a planet for 3000 credits but the loot had to be sold at multiple places and was probably over 50000 credits.
I also maxed my commerce thinking I would need money so I guess it worked too well.
Also I spend very little credits. I have tons of ammo now and my equipment is better than any I've seen in any shops. The Star Eagle is more than enough ship for anything I've run into so far.
