Lol. I think it was a move in the right direction after having been skull fracked for years by PS exclusives.
All this does is level the playing field years down the line. Not today. And only if those studios produce new games people want to play.
Good move but it will be years before it pays actual dividends.

And Sony has 41 million PS plus subscribers, and 2.2 million on PS now.
We are not comparing PS Plus to XLive, that is a different conversation and MSFT has double the subscribers at 90 million. XLive is the dinosaur in the room now and not the future.
GamePass appears to have gone from 10 million to 15 million this year alone. I need to find the article I read a few days back on the financials, but once GamePass breaks into the 20-30 million subscriber range the projected revenue is fairly massive. They broke is down to an average of $10/month (Ultimate more, $1 promo people less) so roughly $1.8 billion/year at current numbers.
Neither company is going to make any measurable profit off the consoles. Microsoft has pretty much conceded they will not top Sony ever in that regards as well.
Microsoft will decimate them on the subscriber option and Sony has a lot of catch-up to do in that arena.

Who cares if someone salary is higher than yours if you live off your investment income?
That's what Msft is doing. Yea they may not sell as many widget but my Lord, they were taking in more revenue in the 'losing position' and just made a move to win even more

I’m pretty sure the studios care about the $1.68 Billion in revenue they made from those sales.
I think that was Darth's point. Sony in this gen is still concerned about individual games sales. That is why they have said they dont foresee a GamePass like service as financially viable for them(at least not with day one releases of first party games) Sony cant afford it. Microsoft can afford to make moves like they did yesterday, take risks on GamePass, sell their new consoles at a loss, and still fund their 1st Party Studios. Will this gamble pay off...we will find out in about 3-5 years

Probably a good place to ask this...
How well does the gamepass client run on PC? The new acquisition + EA play addition has sold me on the service, plus it's hard to beat that price for access to so many games.
So, does it run smooth or is it a clunky mess? Just wondering what to expect here. Assuming it runs pretty well with it recently leaving beta phase.
Between that and the games I've acquired from Epic free games over the years, my pc library will be pretty ridiculous out of the gate.

I have had no issues. Not really any different than running a game off of Steam.

MS doesn't give a shite about console sales, because it doesn't matter. The majority of gamers are going to pay MS one way or another. The same can't be said about Sony. Sony is over here fighting ghosts in a console war, not even realizing the game changed.

Here is the article I saw

https://www.theverge.com/21449178/microsoft-xbox-bethesda-zenimax-media-acquisition-xbox-game-pass
quote:
As of today’s announcement, Microsoft says it has 15 million Game Pass subscribers. At an average of $10 per user, accounting for some $5 and $1 limited time signups and subscribers of the $15 premium Ultimate subscription, that’s more than $1 billion in annual subscription revenue.
quote:
Microsoft could double its Game Pass revenues with 30 million subscribers. At 50 million, Game Pass is generating an estimated $6 billion a year, more than three times what Fortnite made last year and close to the entire annual revenue of Activision Blizzard, the most valuable third-party game publisher in the industry. The Xbox business could pull in only a fraction of Sony’s PlayStation 5 hardware sales and still be generating mind-blowing amounts of cash, purely off subscription revenue.
quote:
That’s why there’s a cheaper Xbox Series S, after all. The more Xbox devices in living rooms, the more potential Game Pass subscribers Microsoft can sign up.
quote:
But what’s important is that Microsoft isn’t all-in on just one path. Putting a new Bethesda game on Game Pass doesn’t mean a consumer can’t buy a disc copy at Best Buy or presumably purchase it on the PlayStation Store well into the future. Microsoft has its bases covered, and it’s investing in xCloud in the event new business models crop up in the future.

Who's to say Sony won't come up with some type of Game Pass of their own.
Posted on 9/23/20 at 11:58 am to DarthRebel
Okay, Gamepass launched on Jun 1 2017. So in three years they’ve added 5 mil subscriptions a year, or about $600 million a year in revenue. Fantastic, but that article has a lot of hypotheticals.
To date there have only been 43 millions XBox Ones sold. To get to 50 million subscriptions, Xbox will have to add 35 million subscribers. At the pace they are at they will achieve that in 7 years? I promise you they won’t keep adding 5 million subscribers a year, and if they hit that benchmark the next generation of consoles will be rolling out.
I hope it pays off for them, but shelling out $7.5 Billion seems like a lot of money to invest in a market they’re currently losing and will keep losing.

Sony's CEO. "Sony has said that the company doesn't plan to bring its new first-party games to a Game Pass-like subscription service because it wouldn't be "sustainable." Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan"
They do have PS NOW but its streaming only and does not have day one 1st party releases.... maybe in the future.

Sony themselves.
Playstation CEO doesn’t see the Xbox Game Pass model ‘as sustainable’

Fatal flaw in your reasoning: Game Pass isn't just for consoles.

Would be nice of them to bring SW:KOTOR some life again. Not a bad exclusive to build upon.

GamePass is available for PC and through their X Cloud Service so that adds mobile devices too .... that is a lot of potential customers beyond just console owners.

Still doesn’t change the fact that they are still only averaging adding 5 million subscribers a year. 50 million is a massive number, and I just don’t see how they get there. 7 years is a long time in the tech world, a lot can change between now and then.
Maybe Sony changes their stance on their PSNow model and Day one releases who knows. I’m sure Sony is enjoying the extra $24 Billion in revenue they made by selling 60 million more PS4s than XBox ones.

At one point Lucasfilm was talking about making a KOTOR movie, so I bet Disney would support such a move.
ETA: Apparently it was even "in the works."

Exactly. PS fanbois are focused on console sales, which generate very low, if any profits, as an indicator on who's "winning". MS is playing a completely different game that's going to leave Sony in the dust at worst or far behind at best.

Revenue doesn't mean anything. Profits are what matters.

Remember hearing about possibly turning back to the old republic days. Maybe Microsoft has some whispers. Having KOTR in your back pocket when/if Disney makes the move to that plot line. Profit. Such much profit.
If it’s good.

Y’all are so delusional. Sony has dominated MS this generation and last. They make up 50% of the market.
Market Shares
Who gives a frick about Gamepass, more consoles = more video games sold. That’s all it comes down to. Microsoft doesn’t stand a chance against Sony until they start making better games, that’s all that matters.
At 50 mil subscribers and $6 Billion a year in subscription revenue, it would take MS 4 years to even break even against Sony. Better luck next launch.
Also video games are a communal activity. Everyone plays on what their friends play on, and at the moment everyone is on PlayStation.
