Some devs had their stuff stolen at gamescom

Apparently it's a common problem. I didn't realize Cologne Germany had these issues.

Today at gamescom we arrived to our station in the business area hall to discover that our two laptops had been stolen over night, despite the presence of Koelnmesse security.
These were machines we were using to demo iam8bit Presents titles Petal Runner and Escape Academy 2 to media and content creators during the show. On top of obviously disrupting our very busy appointment schedule, this theft has potentially put unfinished builds of these games at risk of being leaked.
This is hugely disappointing for us and our development teams at Nano Park Studios and Coin Crew Games who worked tirelessly to prepare for this show.
We ask that anyone who may have information about what happened to please reach out to us.

The devices contained not only our Gamescom demo, but also personal, company, and critical information.

We are aware of stolen hardware and take these reports very seriously and understand the frustration of affected exhibitors.
Since many requests reached us, we would like to inform about general security regulations at the event:
Uniformed guards provide general security across the venue. Individual stand security can be booked separately, and exhibitors are advised to insure equipment against theft.
This is noted in the terms and conditions of participation and the technical guidelines.
All cases have been reported to us and to the police, and investigations are already underway.
We also want to ensure that the reported cases are individual cases, which we are very sorry to read.
Because security has one of the highest priorities to us as an event and to see that indie developers are affected makes us very sad. At an event of this size, however, there will always be individuals attempting to take advantage of the situation.
Our security measures are designed to minimize such risks as effectively as possible.

Nothing will happen, and they will never see their equipment again.
Those who stole the gear are a protected class there.

I feel bad for these people… but why the frick younleaving expense equipment like a laptop away from you.
I sure as frick would be taking all laptops and other easy to carry off items back to the hotel

They naively thought a major German city would be safe from that type of thing.
They were wrong. It wasn't a safe city when I spent a couple weekends there back in 2010.

I feel the same way. I never leave laptops hanging out when I go to events like this, and I'm often in much safer places. Half the time we don't even leave our free handout items sitting on our tables because some random drunk person is very likely to walk by and grab stuff like that even in nicer areas.

No way in hell would I leave a laptop overnight. Its literally made so you don't have to do that.

Added wrinkle. Some other devs are claiming gamescom doesn't want devs to remove their things every day because they don't want to perform security checks on everyone's stuff every day. A dev who had his stuff stolen last year said gamescom pressured them to leave everything.

Sounds like they didn't splurge for the individual booth security which is seperate from the general security.

I've never been to a conference where this was a thing. They should be able to handle the bare minimum of not letting stuff get stolen out of booths overnight. They should have enough control of the exits for that to be a simple task.This post was edited on 8/29/26 at 9:16 pm
