As someone who played both through to the end, I’d say just get both. They’re both amazing.

Erdtree now since you loved Elden Ring. Then Clair Obscur as soon as you finish.

I was in your boat and when I saw turn based game I cringed. That changed once I saw gameplay and I really enjoyed the game.

This is my thought. If someone has recently finished main Elden Ring then I find it best to keep going with the DLC otherwise it’ll be somewhat tough going picking it back up down the road

The DLC is good but it’s no where the quality of the base game imo. I think the shadow fragments was a good idea in theory to try to keep the balancing of the dlc as separated from the main game as possible but I just don’t think it’s translated very well in practice.

It’s still really good and something I’d recommend but imo it’s their weakest content in this genre since dark souls 2. Which really says a lot considering it is still pretty good

I disagree but to each their own.

I'm curious what you mean by "I just don't think it's translated very well in practice"? I thought the fragments were implemented well.

Also, I'm not saying the DLC is better than Clair Obsur by any means, just that I always find it hard to pick back up with the same playthrough on a souls game if I step away for months. The way my mind is wired, I end up starting all the way back at ground zero if I haven't picked it up in a while. So my suggestion was to just knock it out while the other playthrough is fresh on his mind rather than putting ER down and then coming back after he finishes 33.

My favorite parts of SotE: the new weapons and fighting styles, the new spells, most of the bosses, and the new biomes/environments. the DLC is worth playing solely for grabbing the new weapons/spells for a NG+_run of the main game IMO

Same. I would be lost trying to go back to elden ring for the dlc after putting the game down for a while

The way I'm wired, I had to go back and play an entire new playthrough before the DLC came out.
