In honor of the new Lord of the Rings show, I'm trying to power through a Lord of the Rings game. That said, the quality of Lord of the Rings video game adaptions has drastically decreased since the early 2000s.

The Middle Earth series is the only video game based on Lord of the Rings (outside of the MMO), but I would consider remotely close to decent.

I'm playing through the first game, and it's heavily flawed. The game can't decide if it wants to be Batman or Assassin's Creed, and what you end up with is a poor approximation of both games.

The developers seem extremely proud of the nemesis system. So proud, in fact, at they cockblock your progress at least twice until you play awhile in their sandbox, but this is where the cracks start to show.

Something as simple as infiltrating a fort and branding an enemy becomes an exercise in frustration because "oh, this enemy can't be attacked from stealth because video games" and you end up with 47 orcs surrounding you, and the combat system is nowhere near precise enough to get the game to do what you want it to do when you are surrounding by as many orcs on screen at the game console can possibly render.

I enjoyed both Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War for the most part. My patience got tested anytime there were animals involved in a mission (riding a Caragor or the other Rancor thing.) I ended up with a showstopper in Shadow of Mordor due to one of those (I haven't played it in five years) and couldn't finish the game as I recall.

However, it was a great way to spend downtime in a hotel room.

Shadow of Mordor was a blast. Shadow of War was fun, but a little too expansive for my tastes.

The nemesis mechanic was amazing and something I wish more games would implement.

while you are entitled to you opinion you will find you are in the very small minority. that game is very well received and for good reason.

I thought it was a great game and the whole nemesis system is good. Second game had a few too many things going on.

I'm with you. I played both Mordor and war for about 2 hours each, got frustrated and quit. Wasn't a fan.

Thought the first one was great, the second felt like an expansion pack. I think i'm at 30% or so on it. Not sure i could stomach it now, i remember it had poor framerate when it was released.

The pricks at Warner Brothers fricking patented it, so it’s pretty much iced for the next decade and a half.

The problem is that the Nemesis system was the game. It seriously hamstring the developer's ability to tell a good story and/or design missions that don't devolve into brand/kill orcs.

That said, I enjoyed Shadow of Mordor for what it was.

Shadow of War on the other hand (which I have in my library for some reason) feels like a bloated mess.

Crazy talk about Shadow of War. They improved the Nemesis system. You can build an insane army of orcs and level them into gods in the fight pits... and yes, some of them will betray you which is awesome. They improved the game in every way possible then the bean counters jumped in and said "hey Act 1-3 are lots of fun. How about we make the player lose everything they built and force them to grind it all back and toss in loot boxes to help them get through it quicker. Make sure it is really a serious grind so any right minded person will give us their wallet."

Even with the Act 4 grind, I loved the game. I can see why most people would despise Act 4.

I can forgive the grind of Act 4 because I enjoyed fighting and using all of my maxed out skills. I can't forgive the weak arse ending. Yes, they were locked into making it end in a way that fit within Lord of the Rings but it was still a very very quick and weak ending.

I loved the gameplay so even with the weak ending I played it again.

I thoroughly enjoyed both games. SoM is one of my favorites and I’ve played through it twice and am thinking about another go. I thought SoW was awesome but I agree with the above post about act 4. I never finished act 4. Feel like I won the game already.

I was really looking forward to shadow of war until I saw it was just a micro transaction cash grab. Reviews said they basically made the game insanely grindy to try to force you to buy progression. Nope.

Now I snagged it for free with prime. I wonder if they changed that aspect at all?

SoW act 4 is rough, but i got through it and didnt spend a dime on micro transactions. That being said the conclusion of the game and series is weak as hell. so play act 1-3 and stick around for 4 if you want.

I had a my main orc die in an online raid by my own siege weapons after finally getting one that had the headgear/double poison axe combo I wanted. I didn’t play after that.

I just booted up Lord of the Rings Online again for my fix

I've started the game a number of times, but I've never gotten to the expansion content.

Yes and no. I think they got rid of the paid loot boxes but the story is the same. You essentially conquer everything. All castles under your control. Massive army and....

You lose it all. Finger snap and you are back to square one. I think it is worth playing for Act 1-3. Act 4 will still be a grind not worth taking.

The payoff to finish Act 4 is nil. Zero. You see a tiny cut scene.

Play 1-3 then watch the Act 4 cutscenes on youtube. Done and done.

Yeah, it got multiple Game of the Year awards when it released because Shadow of Mordor was shite.
