PS4. Used to play COD (can’t remember which one). I like baseball and basketball games and have played a couple RPG games back then. Recently have a few hours a week and thought I would pick it back up a little. What current game(s) do you recommend are a must play (Not Fortnite)? Best online shooter, best baseball or basketball game and best RPG would help. TIA

The term RPG alone usually isn't a good enough descriptor of a genre anymore, because tons of games have various RPG elements in them to various degrees.

While not a PS4 exclusive, The Witcher 3 is probably the closest thing to greatest RPG made in the past generation.

God of War for PS4 also has some RPG'ish elements as well and is a PS4 exclusive.

And of course the Dark Souls games have heavy RPG elements as well, however they are known for their difficulty and for someone who's been out of gaming awhile, they may prove frustrating. They are the best games, but someone more interest in casual games may be put off by how 'punishing' they can be.

you can pick up The Last of Us, Bloodborne, Skyrim for $20 each. GTA V is a must have. RDR2 may be a little too tedious right now so I'd avoid it at the moment.

The most popular online shooter is Apex Legends.

Recommended - God of War, Horizon, Uncharted 4, and The Last of Us

Best RPG - From what your post, sounds like you'd enjoy Witcher 3. If you want something closer to an action combat, then Nier Automata and Monster Hunter may interest you.

I wouldn't start them out with the Witcher 3. Then he'd realize every other game in existence has terrible writing and story telling.

I agree with you completely.

And it's exactly why I'd almost recommend playing W3 a little later, after beating a few more games listed above.

Witcher 3 is just incredibly good and absorbing, and everything from the main game story, to Blood and Wine, to Hearts of Stone, is completely enthralling and amazing.

Upon completion of a couple playthroughs of W3, it's difficult to find another game in which to immerse yourself.

Am I missing someone mentioning Horizon? Very possible I just scanned over it.

I haven’t even played it yet but I own it. Supposed to be great.

ETA: Lol first response had it

Do I need to play Witcher 1 and 2 first, or can I just dive in to 3?

You don't need to. Every item has notes with it. You might appreciate the lore or recognize characters if you played 1 and 2 but thats like another 50 hours. They made the game knowing they would pickup a lot of first time players.

Honestly the first Witcher game is darn near unplayable by todays standards so I wouldn't even bother with it. Witcher 2 still holds up pretty well. You could likely find a good brief story summary from the first two games on youtube if you were curious.

You can dive into 3. It plugs a lot of info for you, but you can also watch a YouTube synopsis if you want.

I would recommend that but it is not required at all.

Dive right into 3. That's what I did. The storyline is pretty self contained. They make passing references to past events in prior games and you can infer certain characters have histories, but it doesn't impact your understanding or enjoyment of the current game.

Have you seen my friend Odrin?

On my second play through I realized he's in the Witcher 3 and he's mentioned on nearly every notice board

I even found him in game.

Dive right into 3. You'll be asked a few two-answer questions early in the game that vaguely explain and help shape the past, affecting story lines in the new game. I didn't understand it, but the distraction was literally only momentary.

It wasnt reviewed very well, but Far Cry 5 gives you a bit of everything. Flying planes, driving vehicles, hunting, stealth, side missions. I quite enjoyed it. And the DLC was excellent.

I recently gotten back into gaming myself and without a doubt Horizon Zero Dawn is the best game I’ve played since I started back. The Last of Us remastered is excellent also. I enjoyed the Uncharted series back in the day but haven’t played the newest one.

I’m actually looking for a new game to start that’s similar to Horizon, any recommendations would be appreciated. Action with a strong story that has some mystery to it.

Assassins Creed Origins. Open world action/stealth game that controls really well. I finished The Hidden Ones DLC and I'm halfway through Curse of the Pharoahs, both have been great additions. The newest AC, Odyssey, leans more towards RPG.

ETA But the controls, taking out bandit camps, and being able to hide in tall grass, is constantly reminding me of Horizon, a game I platinum'd.
