I had my seldom used PSN account hacked recently and ~ $500 worth of downloadable games were purchased. I caught it within hours and had my money refunded. Unfortunately Sony banned my account and doesn’t seem too willing to hand it back over.

Anyone ever experienced this and regained access to their account? Should I just create a new account?

Hope you didn't have too many digital games

Just about all of them. I wondered why everyone didn’t just buy digital... all makes sense now.

Plus I was kind of blown away at how much DLC Fortnite had available.

I always wonder what the conversation must be like when this happens to people with accounts like “PussscSlayer69” or other obscenely funny or creative names.

“Hi I’m Janet with PlayStation support, what is the username that you are currently experiencing problems with?”

“Uhhhhh....... pussscslayer69........... with uh.... three s’s and a c.”

I'm pretty sure they just ask for the email address associated with the account, and they probably learned that lesson long ago

So I just create a new account and start over? Anything else I’m losing other than downloaded games and progression through those and the disc games I purchased?

I had my PSN account half hacked too. I noticed a random PayPal account attached to my account and someone had added 10 dollars from my card to my psn wallet. I quickly removed the PayPal, my card, and changed my password to something a lot more secure. Luckily I made it out alright.

Good lord. So your entire digital library is gone and you will have to re-buy everything?....

If thats the case I will never buy digital from Sony again.

Keep on their asses. You bought the games; you’re in the right to pester them till they relent.

That's outrageous. Surely they have a better solution for you.

i've seen success stories of people paying off the "debt" they owe sony and getting access again. is everything worth $500 to you? you may also have to just keep trying until you get lucky with an agent. try to get some proof that you were hacked

to everyone else with a playstation: make sure you have 2FA enabled.

also, and this goes for all digital distribution (be it PSN, Xbox, Steam, etc), never do a chargeback through your credit card company. instant ban. try to avoid keeping credit cards and shite on file, they can steal the info from pretty much anywhere

OP, this guy got taken for $800

quote:

You should be ok. Don't worry.
I engaged playstation chat the first thing the next morning. I calmly (and nicely) explained the situation in as much detail as I could.
The psn rep explained that yes, my account was banned due to money being owed, but that due to the situation they could remove what was owed and reinstate my account. They also explained that if it happened again that my account could be permanently banned.
I also underlined that while I was super appreciative, I had two child accounts that I needed to protect. (Let's call them c1 and c2). They wete totally innocent. There were other child accounts (c3 c4 c5) that I did not create nor authorize and they should be removed, although I didn't get the exact name of them until my account came back.
The psn rep told me not to worry and gave me a case #. My account was reinstated in about 6 hours.
Meanwhile my sons lost their accounts and were soon banned after my interaction. I went on to my psn account, locked out the bogus child accounts the besg I could, and waited.
My son was super upset so I went back on the psn chat. I logged in with his email and credentials and explained that he wants his account back and he's innocent. I cited the previous case #.
His account was reinstated in about 24 hours.
Remember to be patient, friendly and thankful. They have you over a barrel and being a prick won't do you any favours. Good luck.
As a sidenote - I have now engaed 2fa and will never add a cc or visa debit to my account. It's psn gift cards from now on.

I have never had a PSN account, but one time someone got ahold of an old Regions debit card that Regions should have deactivated and used it to open a PSN account. Card was so old that it should have already expired at this point. PlayStation wouldn't give me the name of the account, but they banned them. Regions gave me my money back immediately as it was their fault, and I closed all my Regions accounts shortly after.

Damn, how would this happen? I'd be pissed if mine got lost rt now especially with the consoles pushing digital versions.

Need to fix that on all fronts.
