I’m an Xbox fanboy but I recommended the PS5 for the OP.

My OG Xbox never died until I sold it in 2010 and I have a buddy that still has his running today. The 360 was a disaster. I went through 5 of the white ones till my last one in 2009 that lasted until 2019. My launch Xbox One is still running and my kids play it everyday. My One X has never had an issue.
I had to replace both my launch PS1 and PS2 after a couple of years. PS3 slim and PS4 were rock solid. So I'm not any more or less concerned about either system.

I was an Xbox fan for Halo. The OG XBOX was great. I liked that you could play your own HDD music in the background on any game. I stood in line for the 360 and went through 5 of them due to the red ring of death. Ended up spending money to repair it. Their hardware is shite, period. Their controllers all break within 6 months and start to drift. I've had Ps4 controllers for 3 years now and they are still good as new.
I went against my better judgement and bought an Xbox One due to the MCC Collection coming out and they totally botched the launch. I sold it. Sure it is fixed now but it happened way too late. Halo was all the Xbox had going for it and since they can't do that right anymore. The system is useless. Especially if you have a PC. Every game released on Xbox systems going forward will be on the PC. So yes, if you have a PC you don't ever need an XBOX. So that is why PS5 is recommended.
Based on pure reputation I would say the PS5 has better hardware. They make quality hardware. Also after seeing both teardowns of the new consoles, it is obvious that the PS5 has a better design. The XBOX S X 45 looks like its gonna be a hotbox. Poor cooling solution, we'll see how long these systems last. A redesign will probably be needed.
Think about it, the 360 was a major launch in graphics at the time and it was compared to some of the best PCs graphic wise. This generation is the same type of graphical launch in graphics as it is pretty close to high end graphics now minus the new 3000s from Nvidia. Based on the past, Microsoft will repeat its failures with the 360 this generation due to all that power and still making it affordable. They cut corners somewhere for sure. You can bump this when reports of Xboxs failing due to the faulty hardware.

Im right there with you in not knowing what to get.
But im between 4 ideas.
I currently have a Xbox One S. Be faithful to Xbox since swapping to it during PS2/Xbox Days. But i honestly dont care at this point and was leaning PS5 due to what appears to be better solo games.
BUT i have two young kids. One is 5 and one is 2.5. My thought was should i get a switch to start easing my oldest into gaming some.
BuT i also want a Oculus Quest 2. Brother in law has a quest and ive played it a ton. Really enjoy it.
End of day i just dont know what to do.
But im between 4 ideas.

I would be more apt to be leery if Microsoft didnt cover the cost for all 5 of my replacement/repair 360 units and issued a recall that cost them a billion dollars. It sucked but in the end they fixed the problem and took the hit.

What if you dont have a PC and have kids that play too? Would you think an Xbox with Gamepass might be a good choice for them? Certainly a more budget friendly for some.

If you don't have a PC than the game pass is pretty nice. Sony can't do it as they said its not sustainable. So that is a big selling point if you are in that situation.

The Playstation Plus Collection is a nice little bonus for newcomers that buy a PS5. Maybe they cant have as large a selection as Gamepass or they will have to do some price tweaking. I'm pretty bullish on the service being a game changer over the next few years that may force Sony to adopt a similar one.

It really is a great series but I don't know if I'd say best of this century when Elder Scrolls and Final Fantasy and Assassin's Creed have produced phenomenal titles as well, among others.
Exploring every deadly and punishing dark corner in the DS series is highly rewarding for sure though, but it's not for everyone.

Neither right now. I don’t trust the first model of a new gen console drop. I’ll hold off.
That said, it’d prolly be the X because of Halo and Gears.
Though I really want a Spider-Man gams to play. That’d be my only reason to want a PlayStation.

This has to be the biggest fallacy of the gaming industry. The only console to be crappy at launch was the 360, every other console has been fine.
