PS3 got the dreaded Yellow light-not turning on **Update with followup question

Once I saw this, I looked up what the yellow light meant and it basically means my PS3 is done for (the yellow light is known as "YLOD" which stands for "yellow light of death"). From what I can tell it's the motherboard that's damaged.
Has this ever happened to anyone? Have you been able to get the system fixed? Any advice on what I should do here would be greatly appreciated.
oh and I've had the system for at least 6 years so my warranty is definitely up

It happened to me in January when I still had the larger ps3. I tried every remedy that I found online, but I ended up having to buy a newer, slimmer ps3.

Very popular, most people with an old fat have had the YLOD by now.

It is usually the GPU/CPU due to a shitty heatsink compound causing overheating and separating from the Board. If this is the case, and you are decently tech savvy, you can take apart the PS3 (actually really easy and plenty of youtube step by steps), purchase heatsink at Radioshack or somewhere similar, and a heat gun, and heat the GPU/CPU for I believe 7 minutes on low going back and forth to reattach them, letting them cool, and reapply a ton of new heatsink. I did this, worked for about 8 months before doing it again, but it allowed me to get all my game saves and data off of it.
2. It's the power supply, you are fricked.
Go buy the new PS3 Slim V2 for $150 soon.

Yea I have the larger one. I'm going to bring it to best buy and see if they can do anything but I doubt I'll have any luck. even if by some miracle they can fix it I doubt I'll keep any of my saved data. this sucks

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into doing that because I would love to save my data if I can. I'm tech savy but that looks like it may be a little too complicated for me. I'll still look into it though

Don't know where you are located, but the Play-N-Trade here in BR fixed my YLOD last year just fine.

How did you do this?

**UPDATE**
Okay so I ended up getting a new one because the geek squad guy at best buy said it's pretty much done for. He did say that there was a way for me to get my data from my old PS3 to my new one. I think he said something about taking out my old system's HDD and hooking it up to my computer to transfer the data. Does anyone know if that's possible or was he completely wrong about that? Because I tried looking up how to do that and had no luck.

I didn't try transferring the data at all. Instead, I took a screwdriver to the damn thing in order to get the disc that was stuck in there out of the system.

yea same thing happened to me. The Geek Squad people were able to get mine out without completely destroying the ps3

He's wrong you can't do that

Did geek squad charge you for their opinion?
Posted on 7/28/12 at 3:04 pm to sbr2
No they didn't charge. They also got out the game in there for free
Damn that's what I thought. Thanks

Yeah the PS3's HDD are encrypted with no possible way to get the data off of it, other than a direct PS3 to PS3 transfer, so you'd have to try the heatsink/heat gun trick I mentioned and then transfer for it.
Otherwise, no go.
If you already got a new one, why not at least try that? What's the worst that could happen to an already dead system?

If you are in Nola, there's a place by hamburger and seafood on vets(near dorignacs) which can fix ur ylod - no warranty - may work ten day or ten months. I think it was about 35 or 40 bucks. Mine worked for about two weeks, but I didn't really need it since I Had bought a new one.
Once they fix and it can tirn on, you can tranfer data over to new ps3. My save data was worth the extra money to me. Also buy a backup drive to save a back up to from your new machine.

my fat boy is about 6 years old, so I know it is only a matter of time
I will miss the full backwards compatibility whenever it decides to die.

Yea I'm probably still going to do that. I was just wondering if this other way was at all possible.
