Brown, I was told to stay away from Acer and Asus, but that was when I was laptop shopping. Take that FWIW.

there was an OT laptop thread with a bunch of stats that had ASUS as the best buy
with laptops, you worry about build quality, which makes branding important
for a desktop, brand seems way less relevant

Then it should be fine, just don't get any ideas about playing games on high settings. My old laptop had 4 gigabytes of UMD "graphics memory" but it couldn't really handle 1080p shows/movies without slowing the whole OS down.

That i5-2320 is a quad core 3.0 Ghz. $190 on newegg alone. 8GB of Memory, +windows 7 home premium, plus 1TB HDD...all that by itself will push you right at $500. Still haven't touched a motherboard, DVD drive, and a case. So, trying to build this PC for 500 would be very difficult.
I think this is a good buy. I'd recommend it to family that make me work on their PCs when they break...and I hate working on PCs.

Thanks for the input.
Now I just need to decide if i want a laptop with dock, or new desktop. Leaning toward desktop since I have an Ipad that covers everything i would use a laptop for.

A laptop has its purpose. But if you don't need a laptop, a desktop has much more flexibility for upgrades and replacing parts. To me, unless you need the laptop for a specific purpose, a desktop is the way to go.
