Put my 290 into my desktop today.
I need to work on OC'ing it I guess. I am only getting like 8100 on Firestrike stock.
My desktop also only has an 8350 in it too though. I imagine it would do better if I had my ITX build running with my 3770K. May finish that up tomorrow.

Use sapphire trixx OC software. It's the only one that works right for the 290/290x's. Throw powertune up and you'll probably get an extra 1000 points.

Even with powertune, the GPU clock changes based on usage, and afterburner is the only program that will keep the clocks static during gaming (unless the game uses 90+% gpu. My workaround has been:
Set clocks and voltage with afterburner. Click apply.
Set Powertune to 50% in trixx. Click apply.
Play game.
Set clocks and voltage with afterburner. Click apply.

I think I am going to sell my mobo and cpu and switch my desktop to Intel.

I won't fight too hard, though. I'll also add that the voltage is locked on mine, and it was used for mining for 3-4 months (but never exceeded 70C). I didn't tinker with it much for gaming performance.
