Yeah, powerline adapters are last-resort solutions. I almost did that with my parents' house in Florida. 6000 sqft, and the layout of their house made it impossible for any consumer router to reach every part of the house, or the pool house-- I know, OT baller. Not my money though :(

Ended up hardwire networking a few areas of the house and added 2 access points.

Unfortunately, none of that makes up for the fact that he has fricking Hughes Net... satellite is his only choice in that area. It's a fricking bandwidth nightmare when the whole family is there (including my brothers, their wives, and kids) and we've got 16 ipads/phones and 3 laptops connected at once.

When I upgrade my viedo components in the near future I will add an IPS with my current monitor, finally moving out of the dark ages of 3 monitors on 3 computers.

Yeah, that's exactly who said it. That's how bad your shite looks.

On a side note, I did say that not everything from Ikea is bad I just don't like their modern, minimalist designs. But go ahead, continue being their e-knight champion.

I'll use my laptop and run some speed tests from the likely desk area and see if I have much for speed issues. What is my biggest disadvatange for wireless vs wired? Speed? latency?

Wired will always be fastest. Biggest disadvantage with wireless is signal loss, which could come from things like distance to the router or even interference with other electronics, and a weaker signal will give you less consistent and slower internet speeds. If you were able to have a straight wired setup, like an ethernet cable directly into the modem, or the router hooked up to the modem, then you'll get very consistent internet, unless your ISP goes down or something, at basically full speeds.

Basically, you should always try to go wired if you can.

Wired does not look like an option as of now but I just moved in yesterday and we are no where near setting up out house.

Well if that's the case then I'd just set up your wireless network and see if you're happy with the speeds. If certain parts of your house are getting weak signals and slow speeds then you may want to look into a Powerline kit. It could be a better option than relying on wireless in certain spots.

I would make a concerted effort to put the modem and router in the same roome as my PC. My gaming experience>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>my wife's farmville experiece

I assume you're getting cable internetz? The cable company can drop coax in any room. I would definitely try to get your modem and router setup wherever your computer will be. Assuming you aren't moving into a 3-4k sq. ft. house, the router should reach anywhere in the house for basic browsing or even streaming. Honestly, a basic N150 connection with 2x2 or 3x3 MIMO will be fine for nearly anything you'd ever plan to do with a consumer router (i.e., the other basic non-gaming stuff). Assuming there is no interference, wireless is not necessarily slower than wired for Internet (we are a long way away from our U.S. Internet saturating N450, let alone AC or wired gigabit).

Interference will make it a bit slower, but it's the latency that will be your enemy (assuming you play competitive FPS). However, like Bruce said, at the very least try to have the router in the same room or direct line of sight to your wireless adapter. That, combined with a decent enough router, will get you a solid reliable connection with <1 ms latency from client to router. Even better would be to use the 5GHz band to reduce or eliminate interference.

Here's a little PCWorld comparison chart of some AC routers and their signal strength at various distances, measured by throughput.

They also did the tests using different client adapters and different bands (5ghz and 2.4):

Interesting how some of those routers seemed to shite the bed at slightly longer distances using a client adapter vs. connecting to itself as a bridge.

almost never, which is why I doubt I will notice as long as my speeds are there.

Well there you go. You'll mostly notice issues if there's interference and you're trying to stream something wirelessly, especially over your local network (like a blu-ray quality movie stored on a home server or NAS).

Just did a test with my laptop. I got around 30 Mb wired, remove the wire and it goes down to around 20. The spot my desk would be is around 5. I'll be rethinking this.

Eta: once the router goes in its final location it would be a little closer but probably around 10 but still

What kind of router and what kind of adapter? The client adapter can make a huge difference.

There's always the home-made satellite dish option. I did it one evening just for fun to see how many signals I could pick up, using materials around the house (Netgear N600 dongle, aluminum foil, USB extension cable, plastic bowl, duct tape, and an old GPS holder for a car windsheild):

Pointed it toward that window and immediately picked up all of these SSIDs:

(The first three were mine)

Router
Jcole recommended that router a while back in my old house and my signal got much better and worked great. The signal strength works fine for my house except for the desktop situation but we still don't know where everything is going.
I don't know about the adapter, it's built into the laptop but I know it picks up the N signal.
When I woke up this morning my interest wasn't even working so I have to call them and get that figured out.
