Do you have another computer around that you can connect it to? If so i would look for updated drivers and what not for sure.

I have windows, MS office, chrome and all my drivers on my ssd, and I usually kept skyrim or some other single player games on there. I usually kept 1-2 games on there, 3 max. I like having around 20gb free

Why? Also, thanks, now my questions are on another page.. let me quote it.

You can use Steam mover to move games between hard drives. I put the games I am playing most on my SSD doing this then move them back when I move onto another game.

Just to make sure you have the most up to date drivers and what not. It won't kill you but it's always nice to have.

Why MS Office? Office doesn't seem like something that would benefit from an SSD...?
Drivers and Windows I can understand though
I have thought about putting whatever MMO I'm currently in on the SSD.. but with MMOs it's all about internet speed I would think, so I'm almost wondering if it would be overkill for me to put an MMO on an SSD. (P.S: I got an SSD with an insane lifetime on it.. so I'm not worried about rewrites etc.)

When I'm setting up a new OS, I always have 4 steps I always take in this order:
1) Install OS
2) Get all up-to-date drivers
3) Install Applications (Steam, Office, Etc.)
4) Install Games
P.S: Will steam be able to see that I have games installed on my other hard drive? (I'm going to slave my current OS Hard drive.. I figure it can't, but if it could that would help a good bit on time)

In my opinion but whatever game you are playing a lot or has a lot of load screens. Load times is what the ssd will help with, not really performance.
I personally don't worry about this much because by the time you kill it there will be much better out anyway and much cheaper than now.

well my home desktop has actually never had office installed on it.. but I had planned on installing Office and the Adobe Suite on it this time (just bought a 24" for the Adobe stuff), so I'll keep that in mind, thanks.
With Steam having the "switch from hard drive to hard drive" options - it should make it a lot easier.

I'll more than likely be playing FFXIV more than I should.. I'll probably end up putting it on the SSD, which will end up limiting the number of games I can put on it anyways, it's all good though, one of these days I'll break down and buy a 200GB SSD to supplement this guy.

Would you guys recommend doing the whole partition thing with the SSD, or is that for insane enthusiast?
Posted on 7/22/13 at 4:01 pm to BaddestAndvari
Ok crap.. I just realized that this will be the first time I need to "install" applications / programs onto a hard drive that is not holding my OS.. how do I go about installing say, the Adobe Suite on my 1TB slaved Hard drive instead of the OS SSD?
Posted on 7/22/13 at 4:02 pm to BaddestAndvari
I wouldn't fool with all of that. I think if you ever needed to undo it you would have to reformat the whole drive? Not 100% sure on that but it's easier just make folders for certain stuff you might move from drive to drive to keep it organized.

All of your core programs should be on the SSD for starters. It won't make a bit of difference for office if you only use it to type essays or some shite like that, so it's up to you. But in my job I am constantly working with huge word documents with lots of tables, images, captions, text boxes, anchors, headings, references, etc etc. and an SSD can help with the constant saves and editing.
I always install the following on an SSD:
- Drivers and OS, obviously
- Browsers
- General use programs like overclocking utilities, temp monitors, fraps, iTunes, malware scanners, anti-virus, etc.
- Productivity and power-user software such as office, adobe master collection, Autodesk, etc.
Then games. I used to use Steam Mover, but now I just decide which games get the SSD and which are fine to install on my caviar blacks (which are pretty fast by themselves). Candidates for the SSD are large open-world games with lots of load screens and map changes/texture loading from disk (Most obvious example is Elder Scrolls series or Fallout).
MMOs would probably be good candidates for SSD for the load times.
Linear first person shooters can stay on your HDD.
I never do partitions on my SSD.
Really, Skyrim is the only game in which I have noticed a significant difference that makes it worth clearing space for it on an SSD. The loading screens are so fast that I don't even have a chance to read the random tip it gives you during loading. With an HDD, it would cycle through a few tips.

Just select it as the drive to be installed on. So instead of it installing to c:/ it will go to d:/

Dang.. someone has a big SSD

Stout, thanks - glad it's easier than I was expecting

256GB.
I was able to fit all of that on a 120 too, but generally could only keep a couple of big games with it.
Right now, my SSD has the following games:
Borderlands 2
Fallout 3
Garrys Mod
Max Payne
Metro Last Light
Poker Night 2
Portal 2
The Witcher 2
DMC Devil May Cry
Mortal Kombat
Universe Sandbox
Skyrim with lots of mods
Along with all my other programs. So I have about 55GB left on my SSD. Most of those games don't really require an SSD, but I had the space and was lazy.

Well, I beat Metro Last Light. Got the bad ending :(
Overall, I enjoyed it. I think Metro 2033 is slightly better, but it was overall a good series.
Now on to something else. Maybe Fallout 3.
