9070XT is a nice card, and you can use upscaling that isn’t completely shite.

It's early, but I got ~90 FPS on High/Ultra in Cyberpunk 2077.

I got a big 45" WOLED to go with it. Sticking with 1440p for now. I'm beginning to think more like Josh every day. The year 4k gaming finally makes it will always be, "Next year - maybe".

Thinking RT would be the weak point, shaking it out in 2077 will probably be the worst case scenario. My son is excited that I can play Baldur's Gate 3 now.

Definitely recommend you utilize your FSR4 upscaling and also try turning frame gen on. If you do this, you should be able to crank up the ray tracing, probably not path tracing though.

I still can't get over the feeling that frame gen is a poor solution in search of the wrong problem. The fine print of each of the frame gen techs is that you should never, ever, ever turn it on unless you are getting at least 60fps already. And if you are... who the frick cares about adding a sloppy frame in between just to smooth things out a little bit more.

As always, I'm a huge fan of upscaling, but I just don't see the current iterations of frame gen being useful to anyone.

Several of the pros are calling this era FFPS (Fake Frames)

I mean, it's like anything else - if the upscaler is "good" then upscaling is good. If the fake frame generator is "good" then it should be a positive for smoothness.

I just remember putting Cyberpunk on my wishlist over a year ago. Min requirements to RUN were 6gb VRAM. My old 380 has 2.

I can only speak for myself and the times I have used it with my Nvidia card. It works incredibly well and allows me to crank path tracing in cyberpunk at 3840x1600 resolution. I don't perceive any input latency. It's dumb if you are trying to frame gen from like 20-30 frames, but once your base frame rate is around the 50-70 FPS range, you won't really notice the "fake" frames, but you will notice the motion fluidity greatly improved.

As far as the multi frame gen... I can't speak to that, but obviously, the more frames that are generated compared to raster frames, you will be prone to more visual artifacting and worse input latency. But having normal 2x frame gen as an option is honestly great.

2x frame gen is fine. It’s not really my cup of tea, but I understand it.

Multi-frame gen is primarily what I routinely rail about.

Out of curiosity, what’s the price range now to build a pc that’s can run 4k 120 fps for most games

It kind of depends on what compromises you are making. Is this 4k 120 with a lot of upscaling and frame gen or native/ minimal upscaling and no frame gen?

Minimum is like $2k, but if you want 4k 120 with the least amount of compromise it’s $3000-$4000.

Also heavily depends on the game. Some newer games can’t even run 4k 120 native on a 5090.

Very good answer. I’ll add that the consoles have really fricked with people’s perception of performance reality with “dynamic” settings. People think they are getting 4k/120fps on high settings not realizing their console has them running at vastly lower settings to reach the target frame rate.

Any tips on ensuring my gaming laptop lasts for as long as possible? And how long until I need to upgrade it? (If possible) I’ve got a Acer Predator Helios 18. The specs are:

GPU: RTX 4090
• CPU: Intel i9-14900HX
• RAM: 64GB DDR5
• Storage: 2TB SSD
• Display: 18” 250Hz Mini-LED

I primarily play it on my OLED CX.

Get comfortably disassembling it every six months or so to clean out the cooling fans of dust. Heat is your primary enemy in laptop longevity. Speaking of, try to avoid ever gaming with with it on soft surfaces like beds, blankets, or your lap if you can. Know where your intake vents are and avoid covering them.

As for when you would need to upgrade, that’s almost certainly going to be a GPU focussed question. A laptop 4090 is essentially a lower powered desktop 4080. How long that lasts you is entirely predicated on what you will want to play in the future and at which settings.

Anyone in the northwest Louisiana area looking to buy a relatively cheap gaming PC? I finally got around to wiping my old PC and installed windows 11 on it. Only thing installed are the GPU drivers. Looking to sell for $600 but could negotiate some. It's still good for 1080p gaming as long as there is no mandatory RT.

CPU - 9700k
GPU - Vega 64
16GB DDR4
1000w PSU
240mm AIO CPU cooler
2.5 TB total storage (1TB NVME, 500GB sata SSD, 1TB HDD)
Phanteks Evolv X case (very nice case you could easily build a nice upgraded PC in later)

might have asked a question about this a while back but I'm just revisiting trying to get this HP laptop my dad gave me a couple years ago to be useful. Starting a photography business and wanted something to use out in the field for light editing.

It's an HP 15-dw51081wm. The damned thing is so slow and underpowered that it barely can boot up and launch an internet browser.

4GB DDR4
500 GB HDD
1.1 GHz processing speed

But it has a great HDR capable monitor and would be perfect if I can upgrade it a bit. The hard drive would be fine....not great....but fine for what I need and I can throw a couple of 8GB sticks in it for $30. But I'm guessing that processing speed is just going to make it pretty useless right? Adobe Lightroom recommends 3 GHz.

We could give advice to make it a passable old person email machine, but as far as photo editing, no, there's nothing you can do to bring that device to anything resembling reasonable productivity.

Thanks. Once I saw the specs on it.....I pretty much knew it wasn't much more than a paperweight. What a complete ripoff by HP to shite out this laptop.

Just picked up a 5080 and I am waiting for it to arrive.

I was curious about one thing. Since they eliminated physX for some older games on the 50 series, could I keep my 3070 installed alongside and set it as a designated physX card or would that end up creating complications?

Ultimately, I think I’m cool with ripping off the bandaid and losing access to a handful of titles but I just wanted to explore all my options.

I might own and want to have future access to about five of those. I just hate arbitrarily losing access to titles. Oh well.
