I used Crucial in my last laptop, always solid and reliable.

Crucial 32GB (2 x 16GB) 262-Pin DDR5 SO-DIMM DDR5 5600 Laptop Memory Model CT2K16G56C46S5
MSI Thin A15 B8VF-270US
So this would be compatible with this laptop?
Any benefit to paying an extra ~$50 and maxing it out with 64GB?

Yes that would work, and no not really any benefit to 64GB.

Well. Looks like the big selling point for the 9070 cards are all a lie LINK The good MSRP was only for launch and will immediately see price increases after the initial stock sells.
They basically did the opposite of what they normally do. Historically, they list their cards at uncompetitive prices, get panned by reviewers, then quietly lower their prices a few months later. This time, they list their cards at a competitive (though I still don’t think great) price, get solid reviews, then jack the price back up.
Between this and Jensen’s “5070 = 4090” nonsense, this might go down as the worst across the board GPU generation in history.

If you haven't already figured out what you need, Crucial RAM Finder.
I've used Crucial, G.Skill, Corsair and something else in the last 15ish years on desktop with no issues. The 64GB I currently waste is Corsair, and have had no issues in the five years I've had them.

I was surprised to see a 9900X3D at MC. I don't see the point.

I’ve gone on record multiple times that I think the 9900x3D is a waste of silicon. By only placing the extra vcache on one CCD, you’re essentially left with a six core gaming chip with a bit extra productivity baked in. No matter your usage case, there’s a different chip in the lineup that’s a better fit.

Josh, because I can get (sort of) real-time responses, I've been working through ChatGPT for a recommendation - this is a Draft 1 build list and I'm coming to you to poke holes in it. I'm going to do the desk first, so we're still a couple of months away from any buy (unless something silly happens with GPUs that warrants a quick trigger), but here is the part list:
CPU: ?? AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D (~$400) ? Best gaming CPU for price/performance.
GPU: ?? RTX 4080 Super (~$999) ? 4K-capable, DLSS 3 for Cyberpunk, great RT performance.
Motherboard: ?? ASUS TUF Gaming B650-PLUS WiFi (~$180) ? Reliable, PCIe 5.0 support, DDR5.
RAM: ?? 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 (~$140) ? Sweet spot for AMD performance.
Storage: ?? 1TB Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD (~$120) ? Blazing-fast primary drive.
Additional Storage: ?? 2TB Crucial P3 Plus NVMe SSD (~$150) ? Extra game storage.
Cooler: ?? Noctua NH-D15S chromax.black (~$100) ? Quiet, powerful, long-lasting.
PSU: ?? Corsair RM850e (850W, ATX 3.0, PCIe 5.0) (~$130) ? Reliable, solid efficiency.
Case: ?? Lian Li Lancool 216 / Fractal North (~$110) ? Good airflow, clean look.
Just because GPT gets delusional at times, I want to make sure nothing is glaring, but this will be updated as I go.

Save the headache and just get a single 4tb drive if you really want that much storage

Is there no value in the modern era of separating OS/critical systems on one drive and bulk files on the other?
Posted on 3/26/25 at 10:11 am to bluebarracuda
Yep, that and wait for GPU prices to stabilize. Those things are higher than girrafe pussy atm. I don't see any way he's getting a 4080 for 1k.
Wait a month or so, and hopefully, he can get a 5070ti/9700xt for a hundo at least less.

The CPU and GPU listed are previous gen. Current gen is the 9800x3d and 5080. Current gen nvidia GPUs are extremely overpriced and have bad availability right now.
If you go with an air cooler, just get a a peerless assassin for like $60 cheaper.

Nope, maybe 15 years ago when you still had spinning disks as secondary drives with tiny SSDs holding the OS.

I'm not sure I agree. I certainly agree that there was more merit back then, but if someone is running Windows, which anyone interested in gaming almost certainly is, I like having the ability to nuke my Windows install without having to reinstall games, etc. Certainly not a need, but it's my preference, all things otherwise relatively equal. Also gives you the ability of doing a smaller newer gen drive for your OS and a larger older gen drive for bulk game storage.

To address your post directly:
I agree with Gent that there isn't much merit to targeting last gen CPU and GPU right now. The price difference isn't marked enough, and availability isn't all that different, either. If you're looking at that roughly price point, go 9800x3D and 5080.
Because I haven't been actively planning a build on AM4, I'm actually not well versed on motherboards yet. I assume Buildzoid has a video on best options at each price tier like he always has, though.
I agree on 32gb/6000mts/30cl being the current sweet spot on RAM. Just buy a kit from a reputable brand that meets your price and aesthetic preference.
I haven't researched SSDs in a while, so I don't have strong feelings about the selections, but I do like having two drives, as I discussed in the post above this one. When you're ready to build, we can take a closer look at what's on sale.
For a build this high end, I'm pretty much never not going water. I would go with an Arctic Liquid Freezer III for about $90.
I don't know that I would buy an 850w PSU right now, unless I was being particularly budget conscious. I would be aiming for 1kw with a dedicated 12volt. I haven't looked recently, but maybe something like a Corsair RM1000e?
Case is utterly personal preference crossed with price sensitivity. Feel free to discuss any wants/needs that we can parse through, though.

Modern network bandwidth has made this pretty much a non-issue too

Granted. It just reduces the number of steps I need to take to get back up and running.
To be clear, if installing a second drive was difficult, or if there was a large price difference, etc, etc, I would say the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. But it isn’t, and there isn’t.
