As for storage, what kind of drive do you currently have?
I think it is a very low budget hard drive 500gb 5400rpm

Max or rough target?
This will be his xmas money and his savings but if it makes a huge difference then I can kick in a little myself. ($50-75)

We’re definitely going to replace that. Even the cheapest of cheap Gen 3 m.2 NVME drives would an utterly massive upgrade.

We’ll see where the wiggle room is. I’ll try to spec something out tonight.

If I had to build today, this is what I would build. With that said, at this price point, Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales can legitimately jump you entire tiers of performance, so I would be inclined to hold off until then:

One day, I’ll be scrolling through my phone pics and see a GPU with a fork next to it, and I’ll remember

Yeah, I think I can use this Gaming PC upgrade as a tool to get some additional housework done out of him between now and Xmas while aligning other donations.

Didn't you pass on x3d last time to go 7900x? If I'm remembering that correctly, why the shift back?

5700x3d/5800x3d are going to be AMD's version of a 1080ti for CPUs. Those will hold up for years.

Rumored prices for Nvidia 5000 series cards.
They are such fricking scum

I bought a 4080 Super FE for MSRP, I'm good for years. But honestly, part of this is lack of competition.
Nvidia is scummy, but they can pretty much do w.e they want because AMD gave up on the high end, and Intel isn't there yet with their hardware maturity (plus driver issues).

Intel comparing their top of the line chip to a 9950X for gaming... yeah they aren't confident at all about beating the AMD 7800x3d/9800x3d chips for gaming.

MLID will publish pretty much anything, so I’m still cautiously optimistic, but if this is even close to accurate, I’ll be skipping this generation as well, assuming AMD has abandoned the high end.

Yeah Intel is slower than 14th gen and can't beat the 7X3D series. Meanwhile the 9X3D leaks are showing 15-20% gaming bump over 7X3D. Slaughter.

This may not be surprising to any of you, but I was just browsing Newegg and noticed that the 7800X3D is around $130 more than I paid for mine about 7 months or so ago. Any guesses as to why that large of an increase?
I realize "supply and demand" but why would the demand for this chip be so high?

It's not a demand issue, it's a supply issue. They were available for like $330 just a month ago and have since shot up due to a significant reduction in production
I'm glad I got one cheap as well

The 9800x3d comes out in a few days. AMD stopped production on the 7800x3d like a month or so ago in preparation for the 9800x3d launch.
