This is the 4k build I just did a few months ago (upgrading to 5090 as soon as it drops)
PCPartPicker Part List: LINK
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core Processor (Purchased For $320.40)
CPU Cooler: ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III A-RGB 48.82 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (Purchased For $118.52)
Motherboard: MSI MAG X670E TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard (Purchased For $307.85)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory (Purchased For $230.88)
Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive (Purchased For $186.91)
Video Card: MSI VENTUS 3X OC GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16 GB Video Card (Purchased For $1132.47)
Case: be quiet! Dark Base 701 ATX Mid Tower Case (Purchased For $252.78)
Power Supply: Montech TITAN GOLD 1200W 1200 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (Purchased For $164.91)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Home OEM - DVD 64-bit (Purchased For $35.06)
Case Fan: be quiet! Silent Wings Pro 4 97.41 CFM 140 mm Fan (Purchased For $32.88)
Total: $2782.66
Couple that with my $1200 monitor, mic, audio interface, peripherals, etc, I'm probably around $5500 all-in. Sickening

I'm $0.51 short of $3k for my whole entire setup (PC, monitors, periphs)
Even worse look, that is nothing compared to what I have in trading/sports cards

Incredible gaming performance gains with the new Windows update for Ryzen. Make sure you update, I got the update on Tuesday (KB5041587).

Why are they testing 720p
Posted on 8/29/24 at 11:17 am to bluebarracuda
Because it's a CPU test and you don't want it to be GPU bound.

My dad has several hundred thousand worth of vintage cards and packs and he refuses to do anything with them. He sold one of his 1952 packs last year for $70k but that’s the first one he’s moved in years

Thanks for this, going check for update now

Josh - are you going to do a separate thread when you do your mythical 4k gaming build? Not that I am going to leech off your research (which is what I'm going to be doing, of course), but it might be interesting to shadow along, perhaps at a lower budget tier. I only ask because it has been about 8 years since I did a new build. (Is LSU Coyote still a going concern around here?) And, at least conceptually, we will be broadly pursuing the same goals for the build - at least the key components of CPU, MB, GPU, monitor.
I wasn’t planning on it, but I certainly can
Eta: Fair warning that I’m probably going to do a rear connector build, so my motherboard might be on the niche side

The uplift varies pretty significantly between chips and usage cases, so don’t worry if you don’t see much uplift in a particular application.
Anyway, it genuinely blows me away that AMD was leaving this performance on the table for the last few generations, as this isn’t specific to Zen 5. Good on HUB for chewing on the issue until AMD responded with their testing methodology, which then explained why nearly every reviewer, and by extension the overwhelming majority of users, was/were showing underwhelming performance, therefore prompting the longer overdue Windows update.

AMD just wants us to relive through the shitty driver days of the early 2010s

is DDR5 still expensive as it was 3 years ago?

Significantly cheaper. Scroll down for your chosen speed, and this only shows the last 18mos: LINK

I just don’t get why AMD can’t ever manage a win
It’s like with GPUs. They could have picked up major market share over the last few years. Instead, they inevitably priced them about $50-$100 too high, got mediocre reviews, then dropped the price 30 days later.

It's always been a Windows issue, glad to see MS get it corrected finally though as AMD has picked up enough market share to get things done now. Years ago it was said MS had no desire to optimize for AMD chips, and this is the culmination of years of optimization in one large Windows update so the gains are quite substantial even on previous gen chips.
Still insane the 5800X3D sees +17% gains across the 8 games tested. That CPU is quite literally GOATed. Not sure we will ever see a CPU that good again.
HardwareUnboxed with similar gains reported as well

The channel found that, on average, across dozens of games, average frame rates increased by about 10 percent for a Zen 4-based Ryzen 7 7700X. Ryzen 7 9700X improved more, as AMD said it would, by 11 percent.
Nothing quite like installing a Windows update and getting +10% frames.

I don't monitor FPS. Should I be?

Um… kind of? If you’re getting good performance, it doesn’t really matter beyond dick measuring. If you’re having poor performance, then monitoring both fps as well as hardware usage is important.
As an example, I recently installed and played GRIME. Nice graphics, but 2D platformer which isn’t all that intensive. Yet, stuttering was awful. I looked at my fps and it was terrible. Like 40fps terrible. Then I noticed that my GPU was at 99% utilization … but clocking at like 200mhz. After a significant amount of trouble shooting that doesn’t matter (short version was an issue with Afterburner), I was able to get my hardware to play nicely with the game, which then shot me up to a solid 120fps.
But if I wasn’t prepared to monitor all of that when I ran into some odd behavior, I never would have figured out the issue.

Not really. Only if you're having issues and want to see if it's low FPS or big dips in FPS causing it so you can tweak settings to get more frames. Could always be bad game optimization too/bad port.

It's nice to blame FPS drops when I potato a spray
