Well. I used tweezers.

Three prongs were bent flat. I was able to get them all straight. Put it in. One snapped.

I attempted to reinstall and boot even with the broken pin.

It fricking works

fricking hell

Alright, we're not soldering pins onto an 8 year old cpu, so let's celebrate it working for now while planning for the future

I'll start by saying that I don't love doing a platform upgrade right now, and would rather wait about a year. But, with that said, let's start with some foundation: what is your current motherboard, and what was the sku of that cpu?

Alright, so that means if we move to anything modern, we are replacing motherboard, cpu, RAM, and cooler (possibly bundled).

What do you primarily use the pc for? What's your desired and maximum price point for this upgrade? How long do you hope for this platform upgrade to last you before needing to fully upgrade platform again?

And to save me another exchange later, what's the sku of your current PSU?

It's mainly a gaming rig. Yes it can still run stuff I play on lower settings

Max price point I have no idea the range I'm even talking. Is $500 too low for a max? I'd go higher if it meant longer life span from it

I'm not a high end gamer by any means

Here are other parts

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G1 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

I did get hand me down ram so I have 16gig and got a user GPU which is a NVidia Gtx 989

For roughly $500 for CPU and motherboard, I'd pair a 5600 with a solid inexpensive motherboard (I need a minute on this one, as my normal go-to is on backorder for the next month) and have enough leftover to bring you out of the stone ages by tacking on an RX 6650xt for about $250.

I'm all ears and somewhat flexible on costs if it means longer life and stability

Just wasn't sure if I'm at the point where I'm better off for a new prebuilt rig

I mean, frick prebuilts

But as for longevity, it just depends on how much you want. A 5800x3d combined with a 6950xt will give you a lot more longevity than a 5600 and a 6650xt, but the former will set you back about $1,200 (plus the cost of a cooler) and the latter will set you back about $400.

I like the latter.....

My case is also mid size if that matters

Actually, let's go back to your broken pin for a second. Go back to your picture with the bent pins. Do you remember which one broke off?

ETA: I have a hunch, and I'm guessing the one that broke off is the top-most one of the three. But I want to see if I'm right

ETA2: I accidentally posted this separately instead of actually editing the other post. Oops

I have no idea. At this point, my computer is back together and running. I am not fiddling with it again unless I'm replacing parts.

So the reason I ask is that if it's one pin in particular, you should be fine pretty much for as long as you want. This is (what the internet says) is the pinout for your CPU:

In the top left, outlined in purple, are three pins. I believe those are the ones that were bent (note that this grid is flipped from your picture, but you can tell based on where the voids are).

The top pin on this image (bottom on your picture) is a video out pin. The middle is a main voltage power pin. The next is simply a test pin. You are definitely fine without the test pin, and depending on exactly what you're using for your display, you might be fine without the video pin, but that's a little dicey. I don't think you would boot without every power pin in contact, which would be the middle one.

But yeah, if I'm right, you're in no hurry. Just don't unseat it again, and for heaven's sake, throw away your tweezers

And to circle back around to our original problem:

Without fricking undoing anything ( ), what's the thickness, in mm, of the fan on your cooler?

I assume it's 120mm across, but if not, measure that, too.

ETA: And if it's 120mm by 25mm thick, buy one of these and slap that bad boy on there: LINK

I'll be damned. I bet you the video out prong was bent that's why my monitor wouldn't turn on. My monitor has fricking VGA connection and not HDMI.

My fan is the 120mm by 25. I took off my old fan because it wouldnt work at all. At this point I'll just order a replacement to hold me over

Then yeah, drop $10 on that Arctic fan, clip it in, and you should be solid until you truly want to upgrade. And my suggestion would be in about a year, when the second gen Zen 4 processors are coming out, DDR5 has dropped in price, and there are some reasonable budget motherboards.

And wait, is your monitor plugged into the back of your motherboard and not your GPU?

I'll believe it's the GPU but I'll double check.

I'll take your advice. I appreciate all the help

Haha yeah, double check

And you're very welcome. Glad we made it out relatively unscathed. And in the future, before doing component surgery, ask best practices first
