60hz ew

now that I've got a 3080, guess I should look into 4k/144, but aren't they crazy expensive?

They've actually come down some. Gigabyte has one that goes on sale pretty routinely for $500-600

No, you’re not going to get it. I’m currently playing TW3 (which is seven years old) at 3440x1440 and I have my frames capped at 120 to minimize fluctuation.

I would hold out on 4k for another couple of years. Wait for a card that demands it, and allow the 4k monitor landscape to improve.

ETA: And for context, these are total pixel counts for modern resolutions. 3440x1440 is vastly closer to standard 1440 in pixel count than it is standard 4k.

3840 x 2160 = 8,294,400
3440 x 1440 = 4,953,600
2560 x 1440 = 3,686,400
1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600

Joshjrn and co, can you give me some direction on completing my first pc build?

I am looking at 1440p/144 or 240 hz setup
and an evga or asus brand 3080 10gb card.
EVGA 3080 Asus 3080 Asus/Noctua 3080

would these gpu options work on my case? Does one have a better fan setup than the other options?

what board and cpu should I pair with this? (I've seen you mention having a MB with debug screen is important)

I already own a be quiet 500dx case in white (listed below)
quote:

Key Features
ATX, Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX Support
Tempered Glass Side Panel
3 x 140mm Fans Included
5 x 2.5", 2 x 3.5" Drive Bays
7 x Expansion Slots
USB 3.1 Gen 1 | USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C
Audio Out | Microphone
Support for 360mm Front Radiator
Functional PSU Shroud
ARGB Lighting

I am also looking to go air cooled and will not be mining so LHR is not a turn off for me unless there's other issues with going that route.

Thanks in advance

What are your primary games? Different games lean more heavily towards gpu or cpu. Also, what’s your budget for those components?

~2-3k but not hard budget. My game selection recently has been Tarkov, Battlefield, Smite , RDR 2. Mostly FPS with a splash of open world RPG.

And when you say you want to run on air, is that including wanting to use an air tower cooler on your cpu, or are you open to a cpu aio?

Open to AIO, whatever you feel is best. I just want to stay away from loops and pumps setup

The reason I ask is that if you are playing FPS, you're either going to want a 5800x3d or an Intel 12th gen, both of which run hot as frick. If you are set on not wanting any water in your system and want to stick with air, I would be disinclined to suggest anything other than a 5600x for you. But I would understand.

does the AIO require any upkeep post installation?

Nope. It's sealed. If you try to open it up, you'll break it.

And I appreciate that this is a bit of a random question, but how much of an issue is dust/pet hair in your home? Trying to figure out how to thread a particular airflow needle being you already have a case.

Cool. I see no issue with going AIO route then

Should not be an issue as I keep the dust buildup on my consoles, monitor, and UPS down. My case has a couple magnetic dust covers that I will keep clean too.

Ok, so I had a few cocktails at brunch, and then loaded 18ft3 of mulch into and out of the car in the heat because Ilovemywifeilovemywifeilovemywife (it helps me if I just repeat it ), so I'm a little out of my normal headspace, but with your case, I would put something like this together. It's a little YOLO, but I love the idea of going cpu 360 as front intake, gpu hybrid 240 exhaust on the top, and one unobstructed rear fan. You'll be a little negative pressure, but unless you're swimming in pets, it should be fine. But, feel free to wait for someone else to come along with an objectively more reasonable build

Awesome thanks for the list.

I'm reading that with B550 boards that I'll likely need to do a bios flashback for the 5800x3d. Is it as simple as downloading a driver onto a usb and transferring to MB before installing cpu? or is that only with used boards?

And as far as audio goes, is there much of a difference between the different price points for motherboards?

You'll need to use flashback if the bios on the board is an older version because it's been sitting on the shelf for a bit. Has nothing to do with it being used. But anytime a new cpu comes out, it's a serious point of concern when you buy a board. It's why flashback is a non-negotiable for me. People who act like it's not a big deal are people who have a drawer full of cpus from past builds, which isn't most people.

Anyway, each manufacturer has slightly different instructions. This is how to do it with an MSI board: LINK

Never use front panel audio connectors, no matter the board. They all suck, because they are never insulated well enough. As long as you are using the rear connectors, I can't fathom you would see a difference between them. But if you want true professional grade, you'll likely need a PCIe add on card, regardless.

So if I’m using the front inputs for plugging in my mic, would that explain the feedback I sometimes get? Has it really been that simple of a fix this whole time?..

Probably, yep. Front panel audio uses shite cables and then runs them a long distance right next to components putting out significant electrical fields. No one should use front panel audio. Ever. I actually pulled mine completely out of my case (and those frickers were glued in…) just to make cable management easier

I keep telling myself to impulse upgrade to a 5900x or 12900k until I remember I would only get like a 1% performance improvement
