Periphs are cheap and easy to get. The monitor is one I'm still deciding on. I'm probably going to go with a 24" 1080p 60hz monitor for now, and they can upgrade in the future. Getting the guts down first is more important

This is without the peripherals, and I can likely find stuff cheaper than this if I go looking for sales.
A decent 1080p monitor - ~$60 on eBay or craigslist
Mouse and Keyboard - ~$50 for something okay

I'm up a creek.
I've got no idea what language you are speaking.
Looks like I need to do a little more homework.

I would go 8600/1070. fricking RAM prices suck.
Eta: a 1080ti for 1080 is so overkill

That's why I said they can use the 1080 monitor as a place holder.
It's better to go higher tier on the parts now and then get the monitor later instead of doing it vice versa

Still 1070 for 1440 ain't bad at all

I did it for a while, which is why I upgraded to a 1080>1080ti.
But higher refresh monitors > higher pixel monitors. Also if the kid wants to save some, you can get Asus VG248Q monitors for less then $150

Let's see what he plays first. Imagine running a 1080ti for mostly minecraft

I assumed he's graduating high school, so I figured it was fortnite, pubg, etc
What's wrong with a 1080ti for minecraft

Good point. He isn't 8
And nothing as long as you play real games every now and then to actually spin the gpu fans for a few minutes.

I was kidding about the minecraft part.
Your GPU probably doesnt even get use during it

I wanted to get a Ryzen 2700, but i don't know if the older/cheaper b350 Mobos come with updated bios.

New ones should but box will say. If not, AMD will send you a boot kit.
Posted on 5/15/18 at 6:16 pm to bluebarracuda
So the cheaper Coffee Lake boards finally came out?
Posted on 5/15/18 at 7:01 pm to STB
The AMD boot kit situation is painless. They overnighted mine.

Does anyone here ever think about building a "retro" system with parts from the late 90s?

Had a 1600x, saw the 1700 on sale at Micro Center for 199 with 30 rebate to bring it down to 169. Not really an upgrade for what I do but felt like I would be doing a disservice to people not by a Micro Center by not buying it. Guess I’m going to figure out how to make movies and shite now.
