FYI the patch for the RX 480 PCI-E power consumption issue is now released.

LINK

ETA: I would like to add that after downloading this patch, the temps on my RX 480 dropped to 49 C. They were 55 C idle before. Not sure if thats related but thought I would mention it.

New AMD driver boosts 480 performance 3.6%, solid early driver. Love how well AMD does these days with their drivers, Crimson has been great.

Nice quick hotfix for an almost overblown issue and solid performance boost right out of the gate.

quote:

GTX1060 6gb $300+ (it is Nvidia, FE is Real MSRP :( )
RX480 8GB $239 (Higher if AIB Part card BUT better cooling, oh and congrats you lucky bastards with your "4=8gb 200$ cards")
So GTX1060 is 25% more expensive, giving you 6% more (for now).

Decent breakdown.

Yeah, glad I bought stock back when I did, feel like the projections of $10 a share for AMD by 2017 is indeed a hit. Got in for a good amount at $2.87.

They're going to retake a lot of market share through the mid range and VR market. After all, 75% of the GPU market is $300 and below, so if Nvidia wants the ~25% high end market early, they'll happily take the mid range market and the 480 is the clear best card in that range by a pretty damn good margin it appears.

Solid execution to regain some market share.

My .02 of course.

We'll see how they execute Zen.

IMO, Zen is only useful for gaming and low end notebooks. I just use Intel CPUs for multiple reasons. A lot of features for enterprise are only avaible with Intel CPUs, and some of those features I use in FreeNAS. Cant run AMD CPUs in some builds.

Idk man, if I was buying a sub 300 GPU I would get the 1060 which is already 15% faster without any OC. Also has a much lower TDP for higher OC headroom. Yes its 3GB but none of those cards will be running 4K anyway.

As for the 490, its been confirmes that the 480 has all 32 compute units of Polaris 10 so the 490 will be a dual GPU card.

I wished AMD would have crushed nVidia in the mid-range but doesnt look that way. The only good part is they got first to market.

I read 15% from PCPer, 6% might be right but just info I got.

You do know the FE is 300 and the 1060 is 249?

Yeah it's only 6% and that was before the driver so currently it's under 3% in power difference.

And I completely disagree with the 6GB being enough, the 480 is aimed for 1440P and VR and I'd want 8GB for sure.

And yes I do, once again Nvidia releases a founders edition with "premium materials" that will have that card over $300 everywhere for 3% performance difference stock vs stock versus a $229 8GB card with FreeSync advantages.

I just see it completely different and I guess analysts do to but to each their own mate.

Picked up a MSI Z170A M7 and an i5 6600k today, now all that's left if the GPU and RAM.

The wait for Nitro 480rx is killing me. Might have to pull the trigger on a 1070 or a 980ti if it hits $350.

You will need 2 of them to properly push stuff at 1440 when cacheing 6GBs.

So, what the hell is the point? Thats what im saying.

Yeah this FE edition shtt is just disgusting, especially on a midrange card.

Dont mention freesync if its not avaible on every monitor. You still pay a premium for monitors with it at this point.

Like I said, those midrange cards cant push the frames needed for titles that will cache that much at this point. You will need 2, so at this point just buy a high end cadd like 1070 or whatever AMDs answer is for that card.

Just wish AMD would have crushed it but they havent.

I dot believe the RX 480 will be the midrange king, and it should with that $50 delta. They just want take over 70% of the midrange market in terms of sales vs the 1060.

Clock speeds are the same. My temps have since resumed to where they were pre-patch so likely the temp drop was related to something else.

Would I have issues SLI'ing an Asus 1080 FE and a PNY 1080 FE since they are both reference designs?

Nah, same cards.

I would however grab a VBIOS and flash both of them with the same VBIOS.

Damn you guys. I pay for 2 seperate ISPs because I need more bandwidth.

ATT @ 75/10 @ 3-5ms this line is fiber to the house. Used for the main pc/computer room and HTPCs in other rooms.

RTC @ 65/5 @ 15-20 this line is used for all streaming TVs, game consoles, internet of things shtt and random other shtt like guest wifi.

We jumped up cable years so the bandwidth is needed. Our old place had great 150/5 @ 30-40. Not the best up and latency but down was great. We built a new house in a new part of the subdivion in 2013 with only one selection at 25/5 for more than what we previously paid for 150/5.

You guys are lucky.

What you get hardwired?

That is sweet WiFi. Crazy my LTE is faster than our shtty land ISPs when im not throttled by ATT.

Jesus that is sweet. I got 150 in 2012, but once we moved my speeds got hit hard. I do like ATT full fiber. That line is snappy.

I'm surprised you cant get more with a fiber line running. I pay $100/month for the most basic out of the wall cable and 50 down. Cox did the free double your speed thing a couple of years ago so I was getting 115, I am in the same complex I but in a building with only two apartments so I guess I am either closer to the switch or I am not sharing with as many people.

Yeah ATT is a PoS but the low latency makes it snappy. RTC is straight coxial.
