I would be surprised at this point if AMD didn't hit the market with both Zen and a Vega GPU this fall for a complete package offering. They are waiting to unveil both together, which is what they should be doing. You'll be able to build a Zen desktop with a Vega/Polaris GPU for half the price of an Intel and equivalent Nvida GPU, with near identical performance (this is assuming it's true that Zen is within 5-10% IPC of Skylake as reported for ~half the price).
But to ILike's point a lot of people are upgrading on what's here now and a big portion of them will not shell out the cash again in a few months, and a lot of people aren't willing to wait on speculation.

People that are forking over a grand for a 1080 weren't going to be their customers anyways IMO.
Everyone else meanwhile is waiting for HBM2 cards this fall, be it the 1080ti or Vega, including myself, ILike, and sounds like Coyote is waiting as well.
I would say a lot more are waiting than you think.

I just want something more powerful than the 480.
Keep in mind if you are just doing 1080p, the 480 is beyond enough power.
The 480 is at/near GTX980 performance, and at/above a 390X, per latest reports based off the 470 performance, for $199-$249.
That price for performance is just insane for a $150 470 which is decently more powerful than a 380X and right there with a Titan.
I don't think anyone thought the little ole 470 was going to have that kind of performance.

I paid $1.3k for one TITAN and almost $1.1k for the second. Then less than 1yr later I couldn't get over $550ea for them. At the time it was a huge release with crazy performance increase. The price was justified for me but when reselling within a year and not getting 50% of a return thought me a lesson.
If we did see 40-45% increase along with the compute power increase and double VRAM like GK104-400 to GK110-400 then I might consider.
I'm not sure why they are selling for so much. IMO the performance doesn't justify it, especially for 4K. WTH will you do with 1 card in 4K? My conclusion is that nVidia is really smart with creating this 3 Step Release Cycle of "Little - Full - Big". For those buying into with Little it justifies the premium price for say 40% of their consumer base because they are in a needed upgrade. Then about 20% of that base just wants a performance increase and roughly 5% just follow the latest.
So if a products life cycle (archetiture) is 18months. On avg you should be able to pull premium prices on the same architecture for 18months straight. Usually tech's architecture gets cheaper in the same year leading up to next year's refresh. What nVidia does it keep that tech relevant by releasing cut down versions and then producing the full chips.
They really know how to turn a profit on their R&D into architectures.

I want to wait for the TI but I want to get off of two cards, hell who am I kidding I will probably upgrade the 108 0 to a TI releases.
Posted on 6/15/16 at 5:16 pm to LSU Coyote
Hell yeah they do, their marketing can spin anything at this point at any price.
On the flip side, I love what AMD is doing targeting the non enthusiast market that makes up nearly 80% of all GPU sales with a couple of offerings Nvidia has nothing in.
Of all GPU's sold last year, 75% of them were under $300. AMD is about to have multiple offerings under $300, with fantastic performance, that have ZERO competition.

If you are a single card person, yeah it doesn't hurt all that much on resale. Especially on air.. but for water coolers it like having a baby.
Then again like I said above. It all depends where you are at with your current set-up. NEVER wait on tech, I always or have mostly been an early adopter but sometimes its not even worth the upgrade. Hence me going to 2xTITANS to 2x780Tis. Luckily I got to reuse my water blocks.
I say buy. You are on 2x970s, 1 1080 will be a hell of an upgrade for you. A luck of games do not support at launch or scale badly in SLi. This upgrade is worth it in your situation.
Posted on 6/15/16 at 5:24 pm to DoUrden
I think you should wait for sure, especially if you're likely to upgrade to the 1080ti either way. Spending that money on a 1080, only to sell it months later for a 1080ti seems foolish...but it's your money hombre.

Selling my 970's will defray a lot of the cost of the 1080
Posted on 6/15/16 at 5:32 pm to DoUrden
True, but what do those even go for now I have no idea, although I also thought you had 980's not 970's so.
Still stick by thinking you should wait if you're just going to upgrade to the 1080ti months later.

First prices leaked in euros the 470 is E150 which is equal to a $169.99 price.
Crazy to me that for $170 you can get a card with near GTX970 performance and ABOVE 380X performance at 110W TDP. FOR $170?!
I almost wish I just wanted to be a 1080p gamer but, here I am wanting to go 4K.

Yeah, it gets expensive scaling up your gaming experience with the bleeding edge.
I do hope AMD is able to turn things around. They certainly seemed poised to do so. They need to get market share back. Might even be their last chance.
EDIT: But there's always "good guy" Intel to pull one of these:

Stuck with 1080p for now but would like to go to 1440 eventually. Would the RX 480 be enough for 1440p?

AMD stock is rising and analysts are all over it right now and for good reason. AMD is going to be in great shape by years end, now turning a profit again, thanks to the consoles going with 4K versions and Polaris APU's, and Zen launch.
AMD stock was as low as $1.62 last summer, not quite a year ago, was a good buy.

The best part is that the company said that its era of revenue declines is about to come to an end. For the second quarter of 2016, AMD expects its revenue to increase by 15%, plus or minus three percent, sequentially.

They fckked their selves in many ways over the years. We have discussed this in exhausting detail over the years. The main issue was trying to kill Intel on top of paying for a license on x86 on top of it. All at the same time trying to keep up with nVidia's offerings and only giving thier R&D 20% of previous budgets.
All with switching focast back and forth on which direction they should take year by year. AMD fckked up, they fckked their selves.
I don't have faith but I do have a feeling they are on an upswing.

The consoles going with a whole new upgraded model was huge, no one expected that, especially with Xbox using a Polaris APU so essentially brand spanking new, and the PS4K will likely now follow that same route. That is so much $$$$.

Maybe.. I thought it had to do with AMD CPUs being used in Chinese servers. That is a huge market x86 was never in.
AMD selling chips for all 3 consoles barely kept them afloat. IDK why this would just turn crazy profits so soon. Then again I dont keep up with tech all that much anymore so can't speak to figures.

What's been your distraction lately? I stopped hardcore following the industry about a year ago. Just bored and jaded. I don't care until it's for sale. Got back into painting, of all things.
