You really like Black and Red combos huh.

I also love that skin, just wish it was all black. Flat black would be even better. The coolest part is how the cape comes out and retracts.

Have a few ideas.

I just purchased a new laptop this morning to replace a 2012 MBP. Went Dell Chromebook 13, will change out the storage and do a Linux laptop. Not certain which but probably just Unbuntu.

Yes, 970M is the correct GPU for that price range laptop.

Gears of War UE is quite trash on PC. That makes the 2 Windows Store releases to be terrible. Not a good start.

quote:

Ultimate Edition
Pretty bad release here. Lack of some basic features that are essential to PC. No reason at all these couldn't be implemented.
Voice Chat:
-No option to mute your mic or change sensitivity
-No easy way to mute people
-Can't hear anyone unless you have your mic enabled
-Can't change volume of others mics
Chat:
-No chat support during the many loading screens
-No chat in lobby before you que for a match
-No chat when you are dead, should be able to at least chat with others who are out
Matchmaking:
-Takes way too long
-Games are not balanced
-Can't switch teams after games
-Can't match with any other game type aside from TDM

-no map editor
-force vsync
-no framerate counter
-mouse accel
-no console commands
-no fov change
-no access to games files
-cant change the config.ini

It also runs like garbage on high end cards especially AMD's and the 980ti.

Shame. At the same time, the blockbuster games aren't getting timely cracks anymore, so there's no piracy-out-of-protest. GOW isn't even Denuvo-protected, but the "scene" is just dormant.

There's only been 1 other game, the new Tomb Raider.

What was the problem there? I heard nothing about it.

No SLI or Crossfire support, VSync always on, always full screen borderless with no options, no mods, no overlays, no mouse macros, locked to 60FPS, less optimization.

Mainly the same problems as Gears of War.

It all stems from the Universal Windows Platform which is for apps. So you are running these games as an app instead of a desktop application like steam. Thus the significant limitations in features and optimizations.

I knew about all that. I thought you were saying the port was broken. The windows store is missing a lot of features right now but I would expect them to be working on that stuff for the future.

Nah it's not broken like Gears is.

I feel like I remember people saying the remaster for gears on console wasn't very good either but I don't remember.

Either way I'm hopeful for the Windows store down the road. For now I won't use it unless I can't get the game elsewhere like quantum break.

So I'm looking to build a pc and was extremely ignorant (still am somewhat). But, I've been reading yalls past posts and they've been a big help. I'm setting aside $50 a week. If I hold out till Black Friday that's $1900, which is probably more than what I'll need. (Though I need everything, monitor and peripherals)

A couple questions: How much would I save waiting for Black Friday vs just picking up parts on sale along the way? Is BF and Cyber Monday worth waiting for?

The other question is more general, the more I research the more questions I seem to have and I just don't know what to plan and budget for.

With the release of pascal will that mean big price drops in the 970s and 980s? Or at that point is getting 970 nonsensical since it'd be about two years old I think.

Is spending extra money to run 1440 better than running high frame rate on 1080p with like a gsync monitor? How much more money will that take?

What's the deal with the new z170 motherboards for sky lake and ddr4 and the m.2 pice ssd (I think I'm making sense) is that a "future proof" move? Perhaps these are questions that don't have set answers.

I don't need to run stuff at ultra, not worried about 4K and i won't play fps games online. My steam library is xcom 2, civ V, eu4, ck2, dishonored, shadows of mordor ( SoMcan't really play on the laptop even at minimum- don't have desktop) I love games like fallout, witcher, gta, Skyrim and would like to start playing those types of games like deus ex on pc for the mods and better graphics

Sorry this was more long winded than I intended

You might find a deal on a hard drive/SSD, or a monitor, but black friday is usually not so great for core components. I certainly wouldn't make it the milestone to start building if you happen to be ready before that.

With your budget, you'll probably have enough for one of the Pascals, but don't forget about AMD either. They'll likely compete aggressively with Polaris around the same time. For your graphics card, allocate about 30% of what you spend on the tower. By then, the 970 will be a card for mid-range to budget builds.

High refresh vs. high resolution is a matter of preference. Competitive FPS players prefer the higher refresh monitors. I personally prefer higher resolution, but still minimum 60fps. I want high pixel density, high-res textures, as little visible aliasing as possible. With the next-gen cards, you may not need to choose. You could get a 1440P 144hz gsync panel... but they are not cheap. $700+ right now. Gsync adds at least $200 to the cost of any monitor at any resolution. That's another reason I say don't forget about AMD. Freesync monitors are cheaper. A 1440P IPS Freesync monitor would still leave you $1400 for the tower and mouse/KB.

Future-proofing is a bit of a myth, but at this point (and especially by the time you build) there's no reason to go with anything but Z170/DDR4 for a build at your budget. The CPUs are easier to find than they were a few months ago, DDR4 is replacing DDR3, and PCIe storage is super-fast if you're willing to spend the money now or later down the road when the prices come down a little more.

So If you go amd card (Radeon?) you also go free sync which is cheaper but not as good? Does that mean you need amd chip too?

Is intel and nvidia linked like if you get Intel could you should get nvidia?

Is nvidia better high end and quality but amd Radeon is better bang for buck? Does radeon still have driver update problem?

Thanks you are so helpful.

No, Freesync is just as good/the same as Gsync.

No Intel and Nvidia aren't linked and no you don't need an AMD chip.

Radeon drivers are quite good since Crimson.

I have an Intel Skylake 6600K with an AMD Fury X gpu and a 1440p 144Hz Freesync monitor.
