I've been using my rig for work and started getting into web development so I wanted to build a rig for gaming.

I got all the parts ordered and I'm just waiting on my 280x to come in. I went sorta budget and put an AMD 8350 and the 280x with 12gb of RAM.

Can anyone recommend a CPU cooler that is quiet other than the CM 212? I wanna overclock the piss out of this AMD processor.

Well my system is done, up and running, barring a reseat of the block this evening. Lighting issues out the arse. As I referred to in the post about FCPU...

The lights in my Luxe case: Top of case LEDs and front of case LEDs aren't synced when you change the color options. They are already sending me new cables and a PCB for it. 30 mins after I emailed them it was on the way...awesome CS from Phanteks.

The LED in my reservoir: Ordered UV, got white.

The UV LEDs in the Raystorm block: 1 out of 4 work.

The UV CCFLs I brought over from my old system: don't work anymore.

So needless to say, I don't find it pic worthy just yet lol. But, it always feels great after a painstaking build to press the power button and everything comes to life on the first try haha. I was mildly nervous about the GPUs after completely being disassembled for paint, but they fired right up and with the new TIM seem to actually be running cooler than when I just had the single 290 in my other build.

After I reseat the block (Did a quick pass of IBT AVX at 4.4 / 1.25v just for shits...got to around 87+ pretty quickly) I'll start running some initial benchmarks before hitting the OC trail. I've been OCing on AMD builds the past 6 years so I need to do a little reading up on the Intel path. In addition to the insane amount of options this MB has...rather ridiculous. Other than those minor things I absolutely love it so far.

Holy crap, apparently some of the pics from the inside of FrozenCPU offices... shite went down.

If they are to ever reopen, looks like someone/something has got to go.

Was about to post those. Somebody went on a rampage.

Here's a redditor claiming to be a former employee:

quote:

This does not surprise me at all. I used to work there many, MANY years ago while they were at the Turk hill location. The owner is, out of many things is Bi-polar and a drug addict. There were days where this guy would come in and be the coolest dude on the planet. He would give us free shite and be super chill. Then there was days where he would come in and rail on us, flip his shite and quite literally put someones head though a wall for no god damn reason. I have had boxes and those hard plastic mouse pads thrown at me (I got to keep the pad at least, fricker hurt like hell.). He promised the staff whoever could find a better packing solution would get $500 bucks because those packing peanuts were such a pain in the arse. I presented him with those Pactive air bag things (they were fairly new at the time.) and we went with them. Did I get any money, NOPE. There were days when this dude would come in with a 24 case of beer and lock himself in the office. Other days when his "buddy" would come in and they would both go snort coke in the bath room.

I still remember the day I quit, it was glorious. I was doing the job of at least 3 people and getting paid shite ($7.50/hr). He somehow caught wind that I was looking for a new job. So this asshat come storming back into the warehouse house berating me, calling me a useless sack of shite and how he "saved me" from working fast food. I told that arse in front of the entire staff what I did for his company (kept the warehouse clean and organized, shipping and reviving, packing, parts running and some other shite) and told him he can now do what I do and walked out. The next day someone else quit and the following week almost his whole staff walled out. He had to hire 2 - 4 people to replace each person that took off. haha, good times..

I thought him getting and beating prostate cancer mellowed him out? Apparently not.

So are sidewinder and dangerden the only 2 one stop WC'ing shops now?

Performance PCs has a good selection. I think I'm going to try Sidewinder for the first time as they are the only site I've found so far that has all the lighting I'm about to order. Also Xoxide has a decent amount of WC products.

I would use performance PCs before anything else now. I think danger den shut down 2 or 3 years ago. I also would not trust sidewinder at the moment. there has been zero activity from the owner in a year. Their inventory has not been updated since then, and their subforum on OCN has disappeared. Sidewinder used to be my preferred shop, but Gary has just gone dark for some reason.

Gary was actually posting in the FCPU thread on OCN, apparently he has been in the hospital. Everyone was welcoming him back. He was apparently sending out PMs to everyone who said they had placed an order and said they would be back up to full speed soon.

Oh, that's good news. His prices are usually the lowest because he has such low overhead (pretty sure he runs it out of his house).

EDIT: Oh great, OCN deleted the thread.

I've never dealt with Sidewinder but I kinda assumed it was a one man show by the way everyone was talking. Might wait a week to order because it sounds like he's gonna be flooded with back orders from being away for a while.

ETA: Odd, I kept up with it for the most part and I know mods "cleaned" the thread a few times from all the shite talking and arguing. Guess they got tired of it or ole boy has a friend there. The mods on that site can be pretty ridiculous to begin with.

Maybe frozenCPU is/was an advertiser. I'm sure the deletion was entirely to appease a partner/advertiser/friend/etc.

Yea it's an interesting situation, they were a major distributor for a lot of big name brands in watercooling. I've never stepped foot in a MicroCenter but a lot of the posters in that thread were saying that the watercooling parts at their local MicroCenters still had FCPU tape on the boxes, and some of the parts actually rang up as FrozenCPU ______. So I would think MC had to be their largest customer. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the larger companies actually bought out FCPU to keep the outlet going. If not, you would think a huge fire sale is coming, so I'll be staying tuned to the situation.

I didn't realize MicroCenter bought from FrozenCPU, though I've only been inside MC one time in my life. Sounds like they would be a prime candidate for taking over. NewEgg ought to consider it. Custom watercooling parts and specialized tools fill a major gap in what NewEgg already sells. And it might be nice to see free eggsaver shipping rates on fittings and other shite that shouldn't cost $9 to send USPS.

Started building last night. I had to wipe off the CPU heatsink (with isopropyl on a coffee filter) and reapply paste a couple times because I was trying to mount it where the fan would blow from front to back, but changed so it blew from top to bottom because it was much easier to screw the x-bracket (not sure of the technical name) in. I used the pea method. There was a small amount of paste that went over the side from the heatsink wiggling as I was mounting the bracket, it's on the side of the CPU, still on the metal. It's a pretty small amount and I was able to get most of it off. Is that something to be concerned about?

Did an exterior build and it booted right up, amazing feeling. I have everything but the video card mounted in the case, I'll finish the build after work tonight.

ETA: I was also about 5 screws in to mounting the motherboard before I realized I needed to attach more grounding pins to the case. Had to unscrew and start over. Could have used smaller hands last night

it is probably fine, but what thermal paste did you use? Some are more conductive than others. Also, I would at least move the fan so that it is blowing upward.

I used the paste that ships with the EVO 212 cooler. The fan is pulling air through the heatsink, (sucking upward) and that air is being pulled out by two 120 top exhaust fans. Should I turn the CPU fan to where it is sucking through the heatsink and blowing out to the top?

I don't know whether it's conductive or not, but as long as the paste is just sitting on the sides of the heat spreader and CPU PCB (i.e., didn't get under the CPU in the sockets or on the mobo itself) then you're OK. If you don't get the thermal results you're looking for, consider reapplying it with a more minimalist approach.

Did you unscrew the fan clips and move them to the other side? Because I thought by default the fan blows into the heatsink.

To be clear, this is what I think you're saying:

Either way, as long as the air is moving upward.

Martin's liquid lab did a radiator test for push vs. pull and seemed to conclude that push (fan blowing toward heatsink) was better at higher RPMs (2000+), and pull (fan pulling air through heatsink, and shown in the above diagram) is better at lower RPMs (<1350), but the performance is the same somewhere in the middle, so I think you're ok.
