Would you guys still recommend building a rig over buying one for someone who knows next to nothing about computers and mostly only plays wow? I'd be open to getting into other games of course. Is it something I could build in a weekend once I get all the parts in? I'm tempted to build my own but I'm scared to jump in.

Objectively, you get a much better gaming computer when you build vs. buying prebuilts, especially at budgets below $1000. I know it seems like a daunting task (and admittedly my guide doesn't do the best job of making it look any less daunting on the surface), but selecting the parts for a balanced system for your budget is really the hardest part. The 45-minute Youtube video by newegg will show you how to assemble it. And obviously you have us as a resource to help you pick parts and get through any snags in the assembly process.

Pretty much what I'll use it for too, ended up just keeping my HP 25xi so it's now my 2nd monitor.

And getting what?

I was kinda fishing for suggestions.. but I don't really have other options, I'm not going 980 or AMD

There was some lagging but I've since loaded optimal settings with Nvidia's GeForce Experience

It still exists at least. The recent games that use it are Dragon Age Inquisition and Battlefield Hardline. Supposed to be in Star Citizen too. But we'll start seeing DX12 games in a year, which is also a low-level API seemingly inspired by Mantle, except it doesn't require specific AMD cards.

I used the power supply calculator, and input allowances for an extra video card, extra ram, overclocking, extra HDD, and 30% capacitor aging. The recommended wattage came out to 905. Am I safe rounding down to 860 or do I need to up it to 1000?

AMD FX 8350 4gb
2x4 8gb DDR3 1600 RAM (extra 2 stick allowance)
1 flash SSD
1 7200rpm HDD (with extra 1 HDD allowance)
Radeon R9 290 4gb (with extra card allowance)

this will be my first build

If you're sure you will be getting a second 290 sometime down the line, it's good to stick with a good quality 850W or higher. 900W might be a better choice if overclocking, just to preserve some efficiency.

Just filed my taxes. Second kid born last year, so my child tax credits doubled (for having a dependent and having him in daycare), plus the medical deductions, and being able to deduct mileage for the 9 round trips we made to New Orleans... massive refund. Just have to resist the urge to buy something stupid.

NOOOOOO not right now. Let's get this one healthy first then have the conversation. Gsync sounds good though... Or pay off my wife's student loans.

Speaking of buying something stupid, I'm about to start looking into getting a gaming laptop.

I'm going out of the country for nine months and won't be able to pack my desktop up.

Any suggestions?

Would anyone care to give me feedback on this build? I want to consult someone before I pull the trigger on this.

Potential First Build

What's your budget? Expect to spend $1000 at least for anything worth a damn.

I won't really have anything else to do when I'm over there, so I'm looking at around $2000.

For the high end, I've always been intrigued by the boutique-style laptops that use Clevo shells. XOTIC PC has some:

They also sell custom MSIs, Gigabytes, ASUS, etc.

Focus on GPU. You want either a 970M or a 980M, the latter being better. However, there's a big price jump between the two, but not as big of a performance jump. I've seen laptops with 970Ms for $1500, whereas the ones with 980Ms are more like $2100 and up. However, at this XOTICPC site, there's a 970M unit for $1230.93: LINK

Tons of choices.

Is it out yet so I can buy it? No, no it is not. I'll just keep sitting here twiddling my thumbs until then.
