The game releases tomorrow and I didn’t see any posts for this yet. Anyone else a fan of this spin off series?

Reviews look just above average (81 MC) but reviewers say it’s the best of the new age Paper Mario’s.

I liked the original as a kid and this was a scheduled day 1 buy when it announced, but I realize now the series has somewhat evolved and the last couple entries have been subpar. I’m interested but want to read more user reviews. Started Hollow Knight last weekend and having fun so not desperate for a new game tomorrow

I was really excited about this what it was announced. Then I read they don't have an experience system and that the battles are more of a puzzle than any actual combat so I am out.

This reminds me that I never completed Color Splash.

My thoughts are that it was a terrible idea to abandon the formula of 64 and thousand year door. The series was heading towards something great and something to really look forward to new releases. And they just... Railroaded it?

It's literally just Sticker Star/Color Splash battle system without the sticker/card gimmick and with the spinning ring mechanic. Fans have been crying for them to bring back EXP and for the return of the badge point system but for whatever reason it has gone on deaf ears. I am the biggest fan of the first three games but after that the series is dead to me. It sucks too because the other Mario RPG series, Mario and Luigi, is currently dead as well since the company that made those games, Alphadream, went out of business. I just don't understand why they want to stick this Color Splash/Sticker Star bullshite on us. There's no incentive to battle when you get nothing meaningful from it.

This. I thought they would get closer to this masterpiece. I'll buy it in a year if it goes on sale, but by excitement plummeted when it was clear this was far away from TTYD

Honestly, you should try out TTYD, whether it be thru getting a physical copy or via emulation. There is an HD Texture pack for TTYD thru dolphin that makes the game look amazing.

Also, Bug Fables is the closest we will get to classic Paper Mario. It's essentially a spiritual successor to the first two games.

Miyamoto and Kensuke Tanabe have truly ruined PM. Look at this article interviewing the dev team for Oragami King.

quote:

Mario is famous for its iconic cast of villains. Can you talk about the new villain in this game and how you design a character to stand alongside all-time greats like Bowser and Kamek?

Tanabe: Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, it’s no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe. That means that if we aren’t using Mario characters for bosses, we need to create original characters with designs that don’t involve the Mario universe at all, like we’ve done with Olly and the stationery bosses.

Whether a character becomes an all-time hit or not isn’t up to us on the development side; I think it’s more the case that characters that fans truly accept naturally end up that way. I hope that the origami siblings in Paper Mario: The Origami King will stay in players’ memories, even if they do only end up appearing in this title.

That part in bold basically tells me that Intelligent Systems wants to be creative with the game but Miyamoto won't let them. There's further evidence that substantiates this point, but Kensuke Tanabe as the main producer to the last three games has been a huge mistake as well. Idk what happened to Ryota Kawade after Super Paper Mario, but the series has not been the same from a gameplay and especially a narrative standpoint since he's left the development team for the PM games.

This. Only $20 on Steam and way better than any of the Paper Mario releases post-TTYD.

Hopefully it’s not complete trash like every Paper Mario since Thousand Year Door

Idk how I didn't know this game was released..

Wth.

Not certain why I thought it was a 2021 title.

It was decent, combat is wonky for sure, but I enjoyed the puzzle aspects of the game as a whole.

I miss Legend of the Seven Stars.

They've made the combat in Paper Mario useless. There's no leveling up so you're not incentivized to fight anyone.
