You can't do competitive mode until you hit level 25. Use that time in quick play to get acquainted with each hero and find the ones you like. Try to familiarize yourself with at least one hero from each role (attack/defend/tank/support). You should be fine to do competitive by the time you hit level 25. Its not a hard game at all.

Learn at least one character from each class inside and out, but play EVERYONE.

At the same time, don't stick to one character. Play to the need. No tank? Be one. But don't try to solo tank as Zarya or D.Va, it won't work. If you do this, you will have to get good at tank and healer quickly, those are the two least played, but most needed classes.

Know where characters excel, attacking, your best healer is Lucio most of the time. Defending, Symmetra. Mercy works in both. Best attacking tank is probably Roadhog, defending is probably Reinhardt. Zarya and D.Va are best as off/secondary tanks. Stick to some consistency early until you can play Reinhardt as an attacker or, an offensive Mei or Torbjorn. Etc.

Learn the maps, and know the routes.

Ana is now on the live servers. Weep as Reinhardt rampages through your team and takes all your points.

Had a game last night against a team with 5 DVa and a Mercy on Route 66

I don't know how we managed to push that payload from the second point to the finish in overtime with all the self destruct spam. Both times, I hit my Reaper Ult and killed like 4 of those bitches.

We were literally in overtime all the way from the 2nd point to the finish. Seemed like every few seconds came a "NERF THIS"

I figured out though what I could stand on the opposite side of the payload and take zero damage from the self destruct. Then proceed to lay waste with Reaper.

Everyone should take the time to master Tracer. Once you do, it's....unfair. The amount of havoc you can cause is insane. I'm getting on the board almost every game and averaging several POTGs a night. I cranked my sensitivities up to 100 and haven't looked back. She is so effective once you get used to the speed and movements.

We ran the same setup last night, all randoms haha. Won on defense, lost on offense. It's hard to stay near the payload with tracer since she's so easily killed. On ilios, me and another tracer didn't even go near the point. We stayed at the other teams spawn and just harassed the shite out of them. Our other 4 guys said they barely had to do anything except wait

I've actually tried rewinding from a hook and haven't been able to do it. May have to have perfect timing.

I love having Anas on my team. That nanoboost is the doja . I play as Reinhardt a good bit and it's great to have. Nanoboosted tracer is a blast too. Had a quintuple kill with it last night (double kill on pulse bomb, 3 individual kills)

So I'm making my jump back to PC from xbone. frick having to grind back to 25 before having to play competitive though.
