I use item setup pages. Like Drewbie said, go to solomid.net (or mobafire) and look up the champions you want to use.
Under your profile, you can make an infinite number of item lists and title them whatever you want.
Pick the items the guide instructs to use/buy and put them under whatever custom categories you choose.
I use:
Starting Items
Mid-Game
Late-Game
I put the items I will be buying in their respective categories.
Starting Items - Doran's blade, health pot, trinket
Mid Game - Boots , Infinity Edge, Phantom Dancer
Late Game - Last Whisper, another damage item, defense item, etc...
I also sometimes put additional categories like "alternate defensive items" or "alternate offensive items" or even a separate category for health pots, mana pots, wards, etc... This allows me to purchase other items that may not be a normal part of my build if the game doesn't pan out normally.
This allows you have a set list for yourself so you don't have to go rummaging through every single item during the game. It streamlines your item buying process.
If you want, since you're still just beginning, I'd recommend using the "Recommended" list that the game pre-makes for you for whatever champ you pick.

I wouldn't worry so much about getting too terribly deep into situational champion builds until you get the basic mechanics down. Work on last hitting, learn how far is "too far" in terms of overextending. Get in the habit of warding. Which should be easier now that Riot gives everyone a free ward.

situational, no. But It definitely helped me become familiar with the standard items for particular lanes/roles.
In the beginning, if you're not too familiar with items, it can get overwhelming looking through the item list without sorting it.
As Caitlyn, I was buying AP items, two pairs of boots, and not completing items properly, because I had no idea who was supposed to get what. To me, having a pre-made item list, narrows it down and familiarizes yourself with the standard items that all ADC's, APC's, etc... generally buy.
To each their own though.

While true, you have to remember that there is a "recommended build" tab that Riot has set up for every champ.

Self-made > riot-made
Just to set the items you use the most and any specials, then cut out the riots item preferences you don't use.
Granted when you're learning going with the recommendations is fine.

Just offering advice to those in the thread that just got the game. When I first started playing I didn't even know you could buy items.

I'm having a really hard time adjusting to this meta. I specialized in assassins all last season. I feel really weak right now. I honestly don't know if I'll be placed in Silver for season 4.

I'm at 96 LP in Silver 1 and really don't feel like playing until the season starts.
Last ranked game, it was all plat with one gold and me, a silver.
I fricking hate the hidden MMR/division system.

Teemo is so fricking broken.....
Two auto attacks on me, boom 1400 hp, gone.
Running away as MF with boots and my passive kicked in...he outruns me...
Hit a shroom? Don't worry, you'll only lose 1 billion hp. frickin dumb

Teemo might be the most annoying but he is nowhere near the most broken. Teemo's range is short for a ranged hero and he is very very squishy. Teemo gets bursted down incredibly easily in teamfights and is really only viable in a split pushing role. You are in a weak player setting right now where nobody groups up or buys wards which allows teemo to get away with a lot of things and get strong. Dr. Mundo and Shyvana are easily the most broken. Kassadin is very broken when played at higher elo. The game pre level 30 is much much different then when players hit level 30. Runes and masteries make a gigantic difference.
