Right, but like I said earlier, I need copper and a lot of the phones I find aren't in areas where I can "scrap" it. So that's why I'm wondering if I can scrap it once it's transferred over. I've stored a generator for later use. I'm curious about the looted items I pick up.
That sounds ideal, but I want to say the transferred items still show up in the workshop inventory, which leads me to believe you still have to do the extra step to get the materials.

Once you have the item you can transfer it to your workshop and the components will become available to use....I think.

i think it breaks down the materials you need automatically.

I think Guns and armor, you need to scrap if you want the materials.
Junk is scrapped as needed by the workbench. You just need to transfer all junk to workbench and as you need certain things, the bench will scrap.

This is what I thought.
I collected a bunch of items with circuitry and copper because I had zero. I eventually transferred everything into a workshop and then had like 30 of each. I did no manual scrapping whatsoever.

hmmm, I know my movement keys don't work when I have an item out on PC.

Probably because your whiny arse tried too hard to re-map your keys and now you can't do crap.

I'm thinking this may have something to do with it, but it would be poor design now my whiny arse.

So you're saying once you have an item out, you can't move around?

That is correct.

For every item? Because I've put down a generator, water pump, and some carrots and walked around with them until I found the right spot to put them.

I only noticed it building the shack and beds, but I din't think I tried to move while placing food, water pumps, turrets, etc.

I was able to move around with beds as well. Maybe it's a setting? Weird.

My character looks like a bounty hunter from Star Wars and is a horrible father.

Prefab ftw, my crops on the other hand are all over the place.

The game mentioned something about assigning residents to certain jobs, like in FO Shelter, but when I finished putting up the defenses, the guy just said "thanks, later". So I don't know if I need to get in there and micromanage.

You do. You have to go into the "workshop view", click on each settler individually, and assign them to the shite you build. Crops, booths, gaurd stations, water purifier, etc... Your "number" doesn't go up until you do.
Re: Scrapping. You can only scrap in workshop view, in your settlement. Building will scrap the required items for you as you build. The only time you scrap things (via click/button) is when your running around in workshop view scrapping trees, cars, houses, couches, etc...
If you really wanted to scrap the phones one at a time (for whatever reason) you would have to drop in from your inventory while in a settlement, switch to workshop view, then point at it on the ground and scrap will be an option.

For anyone looking, Cambridge Polymer Labs is a good place to find Telephones/copper. You can also find a special power armor torso there.

The police station in Cambridge has quite a lot as well.

I'm not too far in as yet, with only 3 settlements and Sanctuary being the one I focus on.
Are there actual raider attacks against your settlement? Meaning that positioning of turrets/guard posts is important, or can you just place them anywhere so you get the defense points?
For Sanctuary it made sense to put a turret and guard tower right on the main road across the bridge, but idk if the raiders ever swim.
