Rift Mage is amazing for crowd control. Knight Enchanter is cool but I don't like getting in close as a mage. Everyone was drooling over Knight Enchanter when the game first came out saying it was OP but Rift Mage with the right build is deadly as shite.

I went as an old fashioned tank.
Playing my 1st play-through on Hard. Early levels were rough. Now with some gear and a good party behind me, its ownage.

Only tough times for me on hard was:
Haven,
3 great bears - really the whole southwest hinterlands,
10th dragon.
Other than that hard isn't bad. More challenging than normal but not a chore.

I was a two handed melee qunari but had a tough time on hard and even some trouble on normal against some opponents. ( only have about 6 hours with him). So I decided to change to a rogue dual wielded and seem to be doing better and I'm on hard...

I'm a rift mage too . I'm only level 11 right now though.Would you mind sharing your build and what spells you use? I'm having trouble figuring out what combos to use. Thanks

From Rift Mage tree:
Upgraded Stone Fist
Upgraded Pull of the Abyss
Firestorm
All of the passives of course
Inferno tree:
Upgraded Immolate
Updraded Fire Mine
It's very important to get all of the passives in Inferno
Winter Tree:
Winter Stillness
(I like to use Fade Step from this tree as well
Spirit tree:
Barrier and Peaceful Aura. I used Dispel for awhile but ran out of room.
Use Pull of the Abyss to pull a group of enemies into a pile and set a Fire Mine in the center. Devastating. If you unlock all the passives I mentioned, you will be restoring mana faster than you can use it. Hardly any cool down and one of passives from Inferno gives you no cool down at all after a critical hit. I can cast the same spell 3 times in a row most of the time without expending much mana.

What about against enemies with fire protection?

That's what the other chumps are for.

Stonefist and Pull of the Abyss. I use an ice or electricity staff most of the time bc that's currently my 2 best DPS staves. My build isn't perfect but I'm comfortable with it. I also use chain lighting or energy barrage occasionally.
Also this.

On normal, I didn't even use the specialization for my mage.
I just started off with immolate, then chain lightning then my staff then barrier.
Rinse repeat.

I could get away with not using it but it's too much fun watching 6 enemies get pulled into a pile and then explode 10 ft in the air on fire.

Thanks. I was close to having it right. I was using pull of the abyss, then immolate and then fire mine. I know combinations make your focus go up, but does it tell you when you actually do one? Also, I chose mark of the rift over firestorm. Do you find firestorm more useful? Thanks for the input!

I need to learn the combos. I never paid much heed to them.
Posted on 12/31/14 at 3:57 pm to TigerMyth36
I probably should have started off on normal difficulty like I do for every other game, but I decided to start on hard and it's making me work! Lol

Dragon nerds. I bought the deluxe edition but cannot seem to get my armored mount. Is there a way you turn the add-ons on?

It's really the combo of Knight Enchanter plus the fire tree that makes it absurd. Fire Mines and the passives in the fire tree pretty much equals shields up no matter what on hard, and if you go with a melee crew you can keep them shielded by yourself. I've been running with Cass/Iron Bull/Cole on my first playthrough and destroying everything on hard with a KE/inferno setup.
I still need to try out rift mage though, probably do that I after I try out a rogue setup.

If you begin, don't get horses in haven till you recruit the horse master in hinterlands
Posted on 12/31/14 at 5:13 pm to fouldeliverer
I went to the horse master, but then i had to build watch towers. When that started it told me to get a horse from the stable. Had that bastard since!
Also, how does multi player work? Wanting to give it a go.
