I don't have a demon hunter but defensive skills are definitely needed as the game progresses, and Blizz has said as much. I saw a video on youtube of blizz guys saying that you'll start needing resist gear and such later on to be able to survive various parts of the game. It's going to get really tough.

Monk. I love it.. AOE machine but still pretty strong on the single target. Also with the upgraded health regen aura.. I become damn near unstoppable. I tanked Diablo on normal easily. Although that was just normal..

I'm doing a monk myself, and also love it.
What have you specced with? I'm only lvl 12 (life keeps getting in the way), and I'm still trying to figure out what works best. I'm using two knuckles, deadly reach (the one what shoots in 3 directions), and the swirl kick that sends everyone around me flying. Would you recommend anything at later lvls?

Monks can either be tanks or dps with some heals. Actually, they may be the best healing class in the game.
It sounds backwards, but if you want to be tanky, you have to dual wield. Choose the right skills.. there's one skill that makes you extra beefy if you dual wield weapons and more DPS if you use a 2h Monk weapon, the daibo. I use the daibo.
My skills are:
Primary skill: Crippling wave w/mangle rune
Secondary skill: Lashing tail spin w/ spinning flame kick rune
Defensive skill: Breath of Heaven w/blazing wrath rune
Technique skill: Sweeping wind w/ Master of Wind rune
Focus: Seven-sided strike w/ several-sided strike rune
Mantra: Mantra of healing w/Sustenance rune
Passive skills: Transcendence, The Guardian's Path, Seize the initiative

Of course since you're only 12 you won't have all of these. I just made this spec up on my own as I went, so I have no idea if it's viable or not, but I tell you it rapes mobs.

I am happy with my AOE and single enemy damage using Shakram and Bola shot for AOE and using Entangling Shot and Rapid Fire for single target damage.
I did use grenades for most of normal difficultly after I unlocked it for hatred regen and AOE damage, but found out in Act 4 of normal and all of nightmare the range is too small and I was too exposed to the mobs.
Having a lot of fun with the Demon Hunter.
I've been using bola shot, elemental arrow, fan of knives, and multishot.. but I'm just in normal so take that fwiw

I'm playing as WD first time through, but I'm very early in the game, so I doubt I can add anything of note.

Some do. That's just a random magical stat. But the passive skill gives you 25% increased spirit regen when using a daibo.

I'm happy with my wizard. Does about 500 dps. Worried about survivabilty solo in hell and inferno modes tho.
