You've answered your own question.
Yup. Your helmet literally just turns in to a pumpkin. You can't see it unless you do one of the directional pad actions that gives you 3rd person view. I could see you had it on, though.

I really wish they would let you just match make for raids and strikes.

FYI for everyone, when you finish off that ern quest for Eris, she gives you a pair of new legendary gauntlets with light level 33, so don't go buy any if you haven't already.
