I am seriously considering buying the game.
Never played Demon/Dark. I've seen streams of them. I play on a limited schedule with two small kids and a 50 hour per week job. I like to play games to relax, but this does not look like relaxation.
I love games that reward grinding though. Are the sections of this game repeatable so that I can spend some time grinding then have less trouble rolling through the story?

Beat the shite out of father the first time last night. For some reason the first boss gave me more trouble.

Absolutely. Every non-boss enemy in the game respawns after you visit the graveyard (think Nexus from Demon's Souls). So you can create little runs where you can grind out the some exp/currency.

This game has been super frustrating. Enemies never stay dead and I have no idea where to go. Controls feel super clunky. And jesus christ it's easy as hell to die, I can't get anything going. And when you do die, that stupid loading screen takes forever.

Well, they won't stay dead. Have you opened up the left gate by the 2nd lamp in Old Yarnham?
What about it feels clunky? Are you using a two handed weapon?

Just wait until you get really good. So rewarding

I'm getting better. I learned quickly if you don;t dodge you're dead instantly. I'm petrified to go around any corner because I haven't seen a save spot since practically the beginning. I'm in some kind of underground sewer looking area and have no idea where to go.
I have a feeling I'll love this game as soon as I get the feel of it down. And I'm running the pistol and the extendable saw thing. Figuring out targeting has helped a lot too.
And fricking birds man, jesus.

Those large day 1 updates are a little ridiculous.

So I just died and I'm all the way back at the beginning. What the frick. This game makes no sense. How the hell do I save progress?

Ok. You're going to wrong area. I accidentally did the same thing as you. Please answer my original question about the left gate where you re-appeared after you died (you "save" at the lamps. The game is always saving, so just quit from the menu if you want to stop playing).
There are a lot of notes on the ground in the graveyard that explain controls and what not.
Also, to those complaining about updates, you can still play the game while they're downloading.....

I haven't played this yet but save points are rare in these games

That gate is locked for me "Does not open from this side"
And yeah I figured out a few things from that just now thankfully.
This one?

I saw there was an option to play, but assumed it would stop updating if I did. does it not?
and would I miss anything if I played before it was updating
I've already started AC black flag on xbone. 30 min before I go to the gym. probably wait to start bloodbourne later anyway

Ignore everything and just watch this video. LINK
Ok, I assume you've made it to the big street with a sealed door at the end with a ton of enemies walking on the street in the center.
You need to get past that and through the opening on the left side. There's a hidden path to the left of house with the laughing people. Go left past the dogs in the cages. Once you do that, you'll get to the area where you can open the gate (if you've been the house with the guy in the wheelchair then you've made it to this area).
Since you've made it to the sewers, you've likely already seen it, but the first boss is on the bridge. So, if you can make it to the bridge, I can walk you to opening that gate so you have a shortcut to the first boss. I'd also recommend buying the gear that the guy in the fountain sells with your excess blood echoes.

Nope. You can't play online, but you can play through the entire game without the day 1 patch. How else would people without internet complete the game?
