The N64 was good, but it signaled the decline into nintendos current state. Strong first party content, but a dearth of support from other developers.

I hopped back on board for the switch, but I didn't like their approach over the past several cycles. I feel like breath of the wild was worth the price of admission, but I am anxious to see what they follow up with in the coming months.

Sold less than the SNES and half as many as the NES. Only the Wii U and Gamecube sold fewer units.

Nintendo going to cartridges and refusing to use CD's is why this happened and allowed the Playstation to rise in power.

Sony was originally supposed to develop a system WITH Nintendo but the plans fell through and Sony made the Playstation.

Yup, I know all too well.

Sony came and swept up a lot of third parties who were dissatisfied with nintendos strategy.

The biggest one for me, at the time, was squaresoft. Losing final fantasy vii to the PlayStation was YUGE.

I actually just learned that not long ago and blew my mind.

Honestly, I prefer the cartridges they have with the Switch over CDs. Obviously prefer all digital but we're not quite there yet with storage limitations on really all of the consoles.

N64 and Wii were very successful consoles. Not sure if you are serious or not with this statement.

No. They were not. The other two big names completely destroyed both with their consoles of that time.

I haven't followed the Switch, but aren't most of the games currently out for it from the Wii U?

No, I think the Wii is the top selling console of the previous generation. That's partly why Nintendo was able to withstand the Wii U selling so poorly.

The N64 sold 32 million units worldwide. The Playstation sold 102 million and the Sega Saturn sold 9 million.

The Wii sold 101 million systems worldwide. The 360 and PS3 both topped out at 80 million.

On top of that, Nintendo always sells their systems at profit (Microsoft, Sony, Sega do/did not) and so even when a system isn't as successful as they hoped they still make money off of them.

You must be joking.

At one point the Wii was outselling the other machines 2 to 1.

I download all my games. 1Tb of storage is plenty for me. Also supports external drives.

the n64 was fricking awesome.

Mario 64
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Rogue Squadron
Goldeneye64
Star Fox
Shadows of the Empire (has aged terribly)
Pilotwings
Perfect Dark
The World is Not Enough (not goldeneye but awesome)
WrestleMania 2000
No Mercy
Resident Evil 2
wayne gretzky's hockey
nba hang time
Turok
Mario Kart
Smash Bros
Killer Instinct

it's also the last console where playing with other people was fun.

my friends and I would go out all night, get trashed, and crash in the basement apartments in my mom's house but not before a solid 2 hours of goldeneye.

Generally speaking that's not the case at all

The Saturn was a 2D Powerhouse. 2D games on the Saturn were way better than anything on N64 or PSX. It didn't handle 3D very well at all though.
