Name an online game you're surprised is still going

For whatever reason, whether it was just a cult following or a badly design/run game. Name an MMO you're surprised is still up and running. Private servers/communities don't count.
I'll start with Cabal Online. Found this F2P gem when I was in high school. It launched in October of 2005 and was hosted by I believe OGPlanet at the time. Developed and published by ESTsoft, it's got some cool features like a combo system for skills. It's the very definition of a Korean MMO. Huge grinds, extremely flashy move animations and armors, weird translations, everything we've come to love and expect with Korean MMOs.
Like any game that starts or goes F2P, it's been invaded by bots and Brazilians, but when I decided to hop on my old account for old time's sake I was shocked at how large the community for this game still is after all of this time. There's not an over-abundance of significant new content and end-game content in general is almost exclusively PvP oriented. The market for the game is inflated as with every game that has the option to purchase currency with no real sinks to balance the influx of added currency out of the system. It's definitely one of those games that if you didn't start playing 10 years ago, there's no way you're going to be playing now. I'm genuinely baffled that this game is still officially hosted. All of this without even mentioning that Cabal 2 launched a few years ago. Although I'm pretty sure it's not doing as well as the original.

Planetside 2.
I've been a huge Planetside fan since the original. Planetside 2 started as an ambitious project but more of a vanity project for former SOE head John Smedley. The game had a ton of potential but saw a massive dropoff of players within the first year. Since then SOE was sold off to a private investor and the company renamed Daybreak Games. Most of not all the developers involved initially with the game are no longer involved.
It's not only going on still but they're finally adding a new continent years after Hossin was added. Every once in a while I'll pop in and play but I just don't have the feeling like I did when I did when the game was released six years ago.

Everquest. I still love it and the players that are still playing are hardcore. If you started a toon day one and never made alters you would be in god mode with gear and AAs.

Planetside was really ahead of it's time, amazing game

Warhawk on PS3. It was a fun game back in the day. I logged in to my PS3 not too long ago, saw it and jumped in a match. Seems to be a fairly active community still.

It really was. Nobody has ever tried to replicate the MMOFPS like SOE/Daybreak has. Planetside 2 tried to replicate game mechanics from Battlefield with some success. While fans of the original didn't like the new capture mechanics initially I can see why they did it to attract players from other FPS games.
Maybe if a larger studio took it on but again, I can't see the likes of EA or Activision even doing something with it. Planetside will always have a special place in my gamer heart as no other game could replicate the experience you could get from it.

I was also amazed when they "re-launched" Asheron's Call 2 and left it online until Turbine shut down AC1.
That game had amazing visuals for its time, and a lot of elements people think WoW invented originated in AC2.
It was pretty much a developer-created private server (I don't think there was ever any advertisements or content updates), but it's a gesture of good will you don't see often. That and I think they were trying to prevent the actual emulated server from ever launching because the game shares code with LotRO

Eve Online
For whatever reason, internet neckbeards still enjoy shooting lasers at rocks, blowing those neckbeards up and recording their tears about it .
For a game that is internet spacships combined with Spreadsheets and tons and tons and tons of mouse clicking it has a solid following today. Think it started in 2003

EVE is not all that surprising to me. What it does it does really well, and there's nothing else quite like it on the market. It found a niche and CCP has done a good job keeping it updated.

They have that fan made thing but it has never gotten off of the ground.
Those things never do, especially for MMOs

This and Star Wars Galaxies before the combat "upgrade" that eventually killed it.
I'd still be playing both if live. I had a sub 90% of their existence. No games ever gave me a feeling like CoX & SWG did. You actually felt like a hero in the universes they created or used.
Sorry for the mini hijack

Ultima Online came out in 97 I think. Not sure if that counts though.

Damn, totally forgot this game existed. I remember one of the swords was almost 2000 Astros (which was like $20 of in game currency at the time). Didn't last too long on OGPlanet.
I'm surprised Maplestory still exists. I've played many MMOs and have never understood the appeal with it.

CoX was my life. I meant long term friends across country. Went on vacations with some, real weird shtt.
Yes that was MMO but CoX made you feel super. They had original lore that was deeper than anything out there currently with a fresh game play and customisation system which isn't rivaled.
What about this ghey 90s club tune? It feels good to leave sten to because of hours waiting a terminals for PvP Arena events, Holiday Events and later on Incarnate Trials.

I had a few good groups I ran with over the years. I have real friends through SWG that I still keep up with.

Diablo 2 I guess but I’m not surprised because the game is so fricking amazing. They did a patch about 2 years ago too.
