NetherRealm Studios has officially revealed Mortal Kombat 1--a narrative reboot of the acclaimed fighting game franchise--and mixed with all of the new details is an interesting nugget: Action movie star Jean-Claude Van Damme will be available as a downloadable skin for longtime MK character Johnny Cage.

This and the Injustice games are the only fighting games I ever get excited for. Looks great, and I will probably pre-order.

I get excited for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter.

These days anyways. I'd be excited for another legit made Fatal Fury, KOF or Samurai Shodown.

Love fighting games but I never buy them anymore because I just can't dedicate enough time to go anything beyond being a semi-button masher.

I feel like this game will be more than a fighting game, it does have a campaign and also probably side quests style games.

MK is usually pretty good about that still, other fighting games the overall story wasn't what was important. That's why every character had an ending..but I like how, since MK9 especially, they've put focus on story.

The last one I played was Armageddon which I really enjoyed, I’ll probably check this one out. As far as fighters, I’d like to see a new Marvel vs Capcom

That definitely makes it more appealing.

I'd love a Mortal Kombat universe RPG style game where you build up one of the existing characters using a skill tree or whatever (adding moves, fatalities, etc). Boss fights could be in the side scrolling fighting game style but otherwise you navigate the world in 3rd person.

The story would differ based on which character you picked.

I think Shaolin Monks and the Sub-Zero game were similar to this in concept but would love to see something in current gen like that.

Love the series but I’m dogshit at fighting games. They’re so difficult

Hopefully but highly doubtful, they pull back on the pay to unlock shite.
I have 200 hours in MK11, platinum all trophies and probably have unlocked like 10% of the skins and weapons for all characters
I feel the model had to have failed. They released an 80GB update around this past Christmas on a 3 year old game that lowered some unlocking requirements.
There's no real incentive to buy stuff because it's just cosmetic for short 1 on 1 fights. That's all there is is short fights so you might as well just keep doing that. The Krypt unlocking game within the game sucks and is tedious and boring

MK11 kept it simple. The layout is barely any different than MK1-3 on SNES/Genesis. Uppercuts, sweeps etc, All characters have the same base moves though the animations are totally different. A "sweep" might actually be a fireball toss at the feet but it functions the same
Pause and see combos and like 5 special moves for each character

MK is definitely more on the casual side for that reason but that means you don't have to specialize characters and can switch around more easily
Fatalities and the brutalities are truly the greatest gimmick ever. They keep it interesting and what every other fighting game lacks

I agree, I believe a reboot to this series could be epic.

Like if they made this game again, in the same playability and mechanics that Jedi Survivor just had,.. it would be possibly bigger than the main series. With characters who have powers and can build their own custom weapons used for whatever style you build around.

We know these characters, we know the lore, we know the realms and worlds. That's money if done right.

With multiple characters..the story of Shang Tsung, how he became who he became..or Quan Chi, Raiden, Shao Kahn...it could be a way to build the franchise.

I hardly every play fighting games.

But when I do, it’s MK as Johnny spamming nut punches.

The game has always taken influence from a variety of Asian cultures and idk why I feel this way, but the trailer, the re-design of Raiden, and the music from the trailer just makes it seem even MORE Asian than previous titles, which isn't a bad thing.

Well the first game was a ripoff of Big trouble in little China, Enter the dragon and bloodsport.

And it grew from there, now..it's definitely its own world and style. MK2 in the 90s, to draw you in to the arcade they had story going to catch attention.

I appreciate that from at least 1 fighting franchise. To make it more than just a fighting game.

MK has been pretty consistent about having solid single player content as a FG which is really good.

I prefer Guilty Gear, Blazblue etc. personally, but most fighting games don't provide much single player content which is unfortunate.

As a side note, fighting games are hard to get into, but it isn't that bad once you get over the initial curve. The initial curve may as well be a 90 degree angle when you're new however

Guess that confirms the “canon” ending of 11.

The GOAT arcade game.

This game has aged very well and still holds up today.

John Tobias came up with the original story for Mortal Kombat. After he left, the stories haven't been as good.

We are now in what what would be the franchise's second official timeline reset

The question remains though as to whether this will be a full on soft reboot ala MK9.
