That said, I have no idea why this game has blown up like it has.
Because all of the big name streamers like Asmongold are playing and streaming it at the moment.

I've read that this game is basically solo'd until you reach lvl 50?

Got through the first dungeon what I assume is the first "major" cutscene with the priest vs demon fight. Doesn't seem bad. For those who are higher level, does it ever turn into a "go grind on some mobs" game, or does it pretty much force you to follow the quest line if you want to level up?

Pretty sure it's a follow the quest line game until 50. You don't even have to do the other quests just the main one will take you all the way to 50

I'm starting to feel like shoehorning story into MMORPGs is becoming a pet peeve of mine.
It's one thing if the story is one of the selling points of the game (ie. SW:TOR, ESO, or FFXIV), but shoehorning a story into what is otherwise a very typical Korean MMORPG (complete with in-dungeon cutscenes) is very annoying.
It's kind of like how all fighting games these days have to have a story mode, but at least with fighting games, you can ignore the main story in favor of the "vs mode" content that is the real meat and potatoes of the game.

Here are my quick thoughts:
The gameplay is fun, but it's not as fun as it is in the videos I've seen. Fighting groups of enemies actually gets old quickly and I was surprised by that. Tactical combat against large bosses with lots of HP and telegraphed moves is by far the most fun I have playing this game and they should have leaned on that during the leveling experience.
Leveling is horrifically boring. As stated above, the combat while flashy does get old quickly against the mobs you fight in leveling zones.
The zones are all the same with a slightly different skin. I could not tell you the name of a single zone without opening the game and looking. Contrast that with WoW back in the day and I could tell you everything about any zone by name after playing through it just once
The story is frickin awful. Why they wasted so much resources putting it in the game I will never understand.
There are some dungeons which are really good, and some bosses, and to me that is the crowning achievement of this game, but there are systems on top of systems which will turn people off because they can mostly be reduced down to RNG and that only stays interesting for so long.
I will keep playing to make sure I'm not making a mistake by dipping out before endgame, but thus far I feel like this game is massively overrated but I can at least understand why someone who still wants good MMOs in the year 2022 enjoys this game.

For a free MMORPG it's pretty good

Absolutely. And I have no doubt that there are some really fun things to do in endgame. I just find it kind of silly that developers feel the need to have this boring arse leveling experience in an MMO basically because they always have. Why even waste the development time on a leveling experience if it turns out to just be some chore you have to get through to see the real game.
It feels like it's a chore designed to make people want to buy boosts. I know for a fact that I will never level another character from 10-50 in Lost Ark again, whether that is not playing the game, not playing alts and just maining my first character, or buying boosts, I don't know what form it will take.

Was having fun until I saw how low energy regen is.
Negged and uninstalled.

MMORPG's have undermined the social aspect that made them special by pandering to people who want to play solo RPGs. You are supposed to make your own story in an MMO not be the center of it.

I take it you're not a fan of FFXIV

ETA: In all seriousness though, the community matters more. FFXIV is the most story-heavy MMO of them all. And it also has the biggest social community by far.
I mean FFS you can attend Raves and dance parties DJ'd live. And if you want to know how deep the rabbit hole really goes in terms of how "social" FFXIV is, just look up ERP.

The difference is FFXIV is the biggest and I would argue only noteworthy MMO to ever pull off a good engaging story. The character development is top notch.

Yep, even in Blizzard's heyday storytelling wasn't ever the strong point of the game. It was just cohesive and hype enough to augment the fun gameplay.
Final Fantasy XIV having a good story is much more of a Final Fantasy trait than an MMORPG trait.
As for revisiting opinions on Lost Ark, I just don't think this one is gonna stick. It's got an addicting gameplay loop but it doesn't suck you into a world like the major successful MMOs do. Add in the fact that if you truly aim at playing this game without spending anything, you're looking at a massively uphill climb. At the end of the day it just makes me want to play a better MMO.

played this a little over the weekend. got through first dungeon plus a little. its ok, but i can see where this is going and ive heard it gets very grindy. too many solid single player games coming out right now to spend time with this.

They have powerpasses that let you instantly level your next 2 character to 50 after leveling the first one
Posted on 2/15/22 at 4:22 pm to Greace
Well that's pretty enticing. How much is that
Posted on 2/15/22 at 5:55 pm to HailToTheChiz
It doesnt cost anything.
