KOTOR is timeless

I have been playing the Switch port of KOTOR (not the best port, but it is the only way to play on console in 1080p 16:9).
This game is 20 years old and holds up incredibly well both visually and from a gameplay standpoint.
I am very nervous as to what Aspyr (mobile game studio and studio who shoddily ports old Star Wars games to console) is going to do to this game if they stray to far from the original. Rumors of "God of War (2018?)" gameplay have me very nervous.

yup. its a classic for a reason
i love a good remake and all, but sometimes its best to just leave perfection alone.

Leave it alone if it means the remake is being done by an unproven developer best known for porting console games to mobile devices.
It is also one thing for them to remake what is essentially the same game using modern technology and another to fundamentally alter the gameplay.
It's that part mainly that I don't trust Aspyr to do properly.

I actually started KOTOR for the first time ever about a week ago. I’m on deployment so I’m getting caught up on a lot of stuff I may have missed over the years.

I don’t trust this remake, at all. I would vastly prefer they just remaster it for modern hardware.

A part of me feels like this project will be vaporware.

If they rewrite dialogue, I'm out.

Yea I started having doubts about the remake when I heard they were changing the combat.

Man I miss the school nights playing this with school stuff on AltTab if parents came upstairs

Imma just help you out now. They are 100% re-writing dialogue.

KOTOR is one of my all time favorites. Therefore I fully expect them to frick this up completely and I will set my expectations to zero.
You don't mess with perfection and that's all these developers seem to be doing these days.

I’m just hoping they at least let you toggle to old school combat

This is why I'm forever grateful to Bioware, EA, or whoever the frick, for not fricking up the Mass Effect trilogy remaster.

I played KOTOR last winter and it was by far the best RPG I have played, especially for a 20+ year old game!

The combat feels super dated and the graphics aren’t great, but the story is just so damn good. It’s an absolute classic.

I suppose this is a matter of opinion, but I don't particularly think the combat is dated at all.
It is quite possibly the easiest game I've ever played to break though.

Textures need work (especially Switch version), and obviously character models aren't high poly, but I feel the visuals hold up well for a game as old as KOTOR.

The improvements in frame rate can only do so much for a 20 year old game, which was somewhat ahead of its time when it was released.
Fo me, my issue with the battle system is that it feels very hands off. It was meant to be a turn based D&D style system, but in the context of the rest of the game, it feels very “set it and forget it” for most fights. When it was released, games were already transitioning away from turn based combat to more robust active combat systems, so it felt like KOTOR was trying to please both.
In a real remake, I’d like to see something similar to FFVII: Remake’s combat system where it preserved a lot of the core of the turn based system while also making it “feel” more like an active system which kept combat from ever feeling repetitive or boring.
On the flip side, I absolutely love KOTOR’s progression system. It really feels seem-less and allows for a lot of interesting character builds. I also like the automatic enemy upscaling.

Favorite game hands down. Jade Empire is also really good with more active combat system. The story of Jade Empire was supposed to be the story for KOTOR 3 with the master being the same race as Yoda.

I have never heard that before but that would be wild
I have played through Jade Empire though. Before Anthem, I always felt like Jade Empire was BioWare's worst game.
