As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.

Do his games make money? Kojima is a 1-of-1, his games reflect that, but Konami had to break from him because of his long production times and costs. Wondering if Sony didn't see what they wanted to see from the Death Stranding games, profit wise, and decided they were done.

Yep. Kojima blows schedule and budget on every project - just comes with these auteur types. I strongly doubt DS2 was profitable so it’s probably that coupled with Sony not liking what progress they’ve seen so far. Still a little surprising because a MGS clone from Kojima is sure to be a mega hit, right?

ETA: I’m seeing that DS2 only sold 2M copies, so it was 100% a flop. Kojima’s games use state of the art tech, Hollywood talent, and industry-best performance capture. DS2 probably cost 200M so Sony must’ve lost their arse

I was Kojima’s biggest fan and ended up hating the DS games, but I still think he’s worth the risk on a stealth action title. I think that’s a guaranteed 5M copies solid since that’s what people love Kojima for and it’s not nearly as niche as DS..unless early looks have shown it to be as whacky as DS, then I understand the hesitation to proceed. I just didn’t think it was far enough in development to have anything material yet.

Xbox wants a big win and this is a good high risk/high reward proposition, so it’s a good partnership.

I wonder what percentage of Sony’s decision was based on demanding the game be PlayStation exclusive and can’t be released on PC. I could see it being Sony concerned about too high of a budget and also wanting to focus on building up their exclusives… and of course their live service slop

I didn't enjoy the first game much.

Physint will probably be a buy for me. Kinda disappointing if they aren't able to use the Decima engine though.

Short-term win for XBOX from a PR perspective, but long term? TBD.

The game was announced on January 31, 2024 and we haven't seen anything from it yet, so I imagine it's at least a couple years away from a release.

If Kojima can't use the Decima engine anymore, you're looking at an even longer development time. Who knows if this thing ever gets released or what the console landscape looks like at that point.

Could also be that Sony is not happy with Kojima's public opposition to them moving away from physical media.

There is currently no evidence to support this opinion, but also it is completely irrelevant to what I said.

Correct, no evidence. This is the only place reporting this, and people are taking it as gospel. Anonymous sources are not evidence.

ETA: It would be great if you guys could try to find something legitimate for once instead of just "believe me bro" stupidity.

Well that's the most hypocritical take on the gaming board.

I could certainly see how you would hold this opinion. No one objective could. Based on what you try to present as evidence, I would hope someone with your level of reasoning would hold this opinion of me.

Need me to bump the thread where you were fighting with another poster based on some unsubstantiated tweet and i had to chime in and explain how you do this shite all the time?

Are you talking about the backlash at Gamescom to Playstation's no disc announcements that you mistakenly claimed was an unsubstantiated rumor? That was reported by multiple independent sources, not just one source repeated, and many of those sources identified themselves directly as having witnessed it.

All you did there (and here) is further prove you do not understand what you're talking about.

ETA: Kojima's own public statements prove that many game developers are not on board with this change. No matter how you feel about his latest games, he is obviously a big voice. If you needed a high profile, obviously not anonymous source to prove how the sources I provide are different from (and better than) the source you provided here, you're literally posting in a thread about one.
