They’re not “hard” in the same way as Castlevania 3/Ninja Gaiden 3/Ghosts n Goblins etc - the issue is knowing what the hell youre supposed to be doing

DS2 is fine, it had the burden of being the immediate follow up to DS1. It just lacks a lot of the personality and soul (haha) compared to the other Soulsborne games. You can really feel that Hidetaka Miyazaki was only minimally involved in it whereas he was the driving force behind all the others. But even despite that anybody who's a fan of the series will enjoy it.

Beat the Crystal Sage last night as well. Once I figured out the mechanic, not all that difficult.

So I've already admitted I'm not gud, so please don't judge me too much. Before the Crystal Sage fight, I tried to summon an NPC, it flashed for a bit and then said it couldn't be summoned. On my next attempt the summon symbol wasn't there anymore. Was that the game glitching or is just not available for certain fights?

Were you embered up? Because the phantom summon symbols won't show if you don't have your ember activated.

I was. Used it before walking in and the symbol showed up. Looked like it was trying to load and then gave me an "error" message.

That was an actual player. They were summoned to another session before yours was successful.

I was wondering that. The first time I used it I got the Master Swordsman, so I just assumed I'd always get an NPC. Is it a different symbol if you're calling actual players?

Summon sign colors depend on which faction you have equipped.
And yeah, they come and go as they are summoned or cancel their soapstone.
