Some factions have different influences on gameplay areas.
But no, they don't really matter. Just limits your summon pool.

As a PC gamer...nothing is more frustrating than that. MGS did it too on Phantom and I was livid.

Get the Astora Greatsword in the first cemetery and upgrade it as you get titanite. Thing is stupid effective for its early access and weight.

So the gate to the left of the Firelink Shrine, key costs 20,000 souls, is it worth spending that? I know it has an estus shard and and estus ring (which seems appealing), but I'm hesitant to spend that much. Had the souls last night, but leveled up instead.

I think there's a way to jump the rock wall to avoid spending the souls. I can't remember.

There is a way to bypass it. But kind of an exploit iirc

I'm about 15 hours in. I can get on the roof of the shrine and got the silver serpent ring, but not inside the gate, which is actually on the right side.

Cathedralesque area? If so, I remember hating that zone. At one point, I just ran my arse off trying to open shortcuts or bonfires.

Believe so. Just before it was that graveyard with the endlessly spawning zombies. My mistake was wasting too much time fighting them before I decided to just run through them.
