Is free to play ruining games?

I'd rather pay full price for the game and not get hassled for money at every chance possible. We see it in too many games now: Warzone, Apex, Halo, etc.
What got me thinking about this is what 343 put in the Halo store this week, which is a $20 AI model that you rarely ever see in the game.
Don't get me wrong, the game is incredible and I'll buy the very occasional item if it's really cool, but paying 1/3 the price of a game is ridiculous.
I'm in business so I get that they have to make money, but their profit margins have to be crazy high. If they lowered the price of the items, I'd bet a lot more people would buy them.

I don't think it is. As long as the game is fun to play and runs well, I'll gladly take a F2P game over paying $60 dollars every year for the same reskinned multiplayer games.
It is still up to the consumer to decided whether they want to spend money on Cosmetic items or not.
I'll never pay $60+ dollars ever again for COD, but if they want to keep putting out Warzone for free I'll play it occasionally.
Honestly I think Madden would do good by releasing a free MUT or Online only mode. I haven't bought a Madden in 4+ years, but if they offered those options I would probably give it a shot.

Agreed. I was skeptical of Halo multiplayer being free. I don't like being asked for money constantly.
I bought COD Vanguard. And while I like the gameplay, I bought a $60 game that constantly asks me to buy $20 season passes.
I get it though, it's business. They do what's profitable.

The problem with some of these games is that they often have major bugs and yet, they never have problems with their stores.
The new Warzone map came out with issues and Halo has been without big team battle for a few weeks
Those are just the ones off the top of my head

If it's a game that requires constant maintenance I would much rather pay a sub fee than the f2p with cash shop model. ESPECIALLY for something like an MMO where cash shop contents almost always impact gameplay and/or game experience in some way.
The problem is the cash shop greed has infected more than just F2P. We now have games that have an upfront box cost, a sub fee, AND a cash shop. Others the upfront full cost of a game ($60) then a cash shop on top of it. When I saw single player campaign-based games coming out with cash shops I knew we had jumped the shark.
Remember when game devs put in optional tasks or content that rewarded you with that sick end game armor set that looked way cooler than everything else? Well that doesn't exist anymore because now they just put that armor set in a cash shop. It has objectively hurt game design and consumers have been conditioned to think it's both necessary and normal. It's not. Games made money before microtransactions and a lot of it.

Bugs are definitely annoying, but I think a lot of that has to do with content often being rushed. A lot of the F2P games have to be constantly updated in order to keep their player base engaged, otherwise its on to the next game.
The industry is moving to F2P, I just can't justify spending $60 on a multiplayer game if I am getting enjoyment out of a current F2P game.
I'll still drop the money on a great single player game though.

F2P no.
Publishers using DLC and microtransactions as a way to continually monetize their games long after release and forcing broken games out the door before they're ready to release is absolutely ruining gaming.
To an extent, I believe developers share some blame (exactly how many years was Cyberpunk in development for again), but I am talking about games like Battlefield, Assassin's Creed Unity, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, etc.

IMO there will always be this kind of trash, but also games for people with more discerning taste. I really hope Halo holds firm on only selling cosmetics.
Elden Ring is almost here. There will be a new God of War; Final Fantasy XVI, Elder Scrolls 6. Doom isn’t done either.

This. MW2/3 was unplayable later in the year if you didn't fork over the money for new maps.

Yea and this totally doesn't happen with paid games

I mean, at the end of the day, you're not forced to pay anything. The game isn't a charity, so the devs have to make money somehow. Some games have far more egregious P2W mechanics than others though, and I have played many F2P he's where I would gladly pay a fee just to remove all microtramsactions

I was more so speaking on the part about the bugs.

I dont think ive been hassled about buying content from any of these games at all. sure they offer paid skins/whatever, but im not getting popup messages other than maybe an event or new season announcement.
apex legends is the opposite of ruining games. Im embarrassed for having paid for halo games in the past with apex being free.

Remember when everyone was outraged with Bethesda and their 3.00 dollar horse armor?
